Unless Nadal suddenly wakes up, this 1st set is over. Nadal looks like he has not recovered from last night match. No energy at all from him.
One thing his team says is that the day after a match his foot often hurts.

Fritz just donated the game there. At the very least, Nadal has some sort of momentum going into the 2nd set.

Fritz wins the 1st set, 6-3.

I am curious to see on how Nadal will play in the first few games of the 2nd set now.

I thought in all of this pre-match talk about Taylor being injured that it would be ironic if it was the young guy who pulled up lame over the battered old warrior, but so far irony has no sense of humor.

Rafa can't even take this donation that Taylor is trying to give him in this game.

Nadal is angry with that backhand shot. I just think he can’t find the energy to generate some momentum.

Fun game. Let’s see if Nadal can finally get some energy here.

It's called aging! Rafa's draw was brutal from the beginning, needing to come back from the dead more than once! :astonished-face: :fearful-face::face-with-tears-of-joy::face-with-hand-over-mouth:
Fiero do you remember when Lendl started to lose it? I remember he said at a presser after a loss that he knew what he needed to do but that he just couldn’t muster the mental desire to care.

And Ivan was like a machine, so mentally tough, until he wasn’t.

I think Nadal has it all mentally, but the weight of age on the body he's not winning today...except for that shot!

It wasn't a criticism; more about fact! I'm actually shocked Taylor's staying in front with no real weapon! His volleys truly $uck! :face-with-hand-over-mouth: :fearful-face::astonished-face::face-with-tears-of-joy:

All I know is the older you get it’s harder to keep your mental focus razor sharp all the time competitively. In any sport. That impacts your physical body and yes even your energy level.

Chris Evert said it got harder and harder to maintain that edge day in and day out. Surprised her because that had always been her strength that she took for granted.

Nadal may very well pull this match out, but mental reserves have a limit. Everyone does.

Except for Tom Brady.
