With Djokovic returning to #1, he will only have a 55 pt. margin over Medvedev
Medvedev could still get the #1 back if he plays Miami and has good result.

Novak benefits from skipping these events in the States last year! He might just have a chance of retaining his #1 ranking if he bests them on clay next month! I'm just concerned about his sharpness with such little play in tournaments! His last win was probably Paris Masters! It was all downhill after the Olympics! :astonished-face::angry-face::anxious-face-with-sweat:

Well that was his decision not to get vaccinated he has to live with that, though I take your point,he needs constant match play to keep his level up.

Shapo and Opelka match has started
If Shapo wins and plays Rafa next match I hope he comes on court with a better attitude, not like their last match AO,he carried on like a 'spoilt brat',fans are going to be cheering for Rafa....just focus Shapo and shut the crowd out.

There was a reason that Vajda and even Novak's dad counseled that he skip the Olympics last year. Lots of emotional capital spent in a short amount of time. It seems likely that it will take Novak some time to find his match game in the clay season, based on Dubai, but he'll have almost 2 months to round into shape for RG.

Oops I just got into big trouble by my hubby who know Pete Sampras records off by heart ( though I believe he looked it up lol)

He told me Pete Sampras in 1997 also had a 17-0 win start.

So Rafa ties with Federer and Sampras I have adjusted other posts.

Rafa's gonna need another level to catch up to McEnroe or Djokovic's start! He's already hurt any chance to match Novak's set rec. of winning the 1st 4 biggie events of 2015; AO, IW, Miami, then Madrid! I can't see Rafa getting to 40+ undefeated victories! :face-with-hand-over-mouth: :fearful-face::face-with-tears-of-joy::astonished-face:

Does anyone know that Zverev made 4 straight double faults when trying to consolidate a break at 4:2 in 3rd set?
He probably set some new personal record.

This Alcaraz kid is something else, way too good for his age.

Medvedev is affected by loss in AO and probably this war as well, but nonetheless Monfils is back playing great again and took the opportunity.

Hopefully not too good for his age.

Certainly a lot going on for him. The weight of taking the mantle of #1 and pressure to keep it didn't help. He started well today, and I think he might have gotten though a lesser player, but Monfils made great adjustments in the 2nd and played very well today. Medvedev didn't seem to have the emotional batteries for the fight, by the 3rd.

Brooksby v. Tsitsipas has been highly entertaining since the first set, and he's getting the better of Stephanos in the 3rd.

If Brooksby pulls of the upset, Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Zverev ALL lost before the 4th round of a Masters 1000 tournament, yikes! And these all happened back to back days!

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner survives a tough three setter against Bonzi and will wait for the winner of Kyrgios-Ruud match in the 4th round.

We are one step closer of having Nadal potentially facing both Sinner and Alcaraz on consecutive rounds.

I recall Medvedev lost in Miami last year in the QTRS so if he makes the SF"s there he might be back to #1?
Apparently asking for him to get to the QF or SF is a tall order right now. Look what happened this week when he faced someone w/ an abysmal record against #1s

It's how the Big 3 have been able to survive each wave of NG'rs! All that skill and ability, but anything close to consistency is only coincidental! Zverev, Thiem, Med, and Tsitsipas will make them work for it, but can't complete the deal! Thiem and Med won their 1st majors and take a YEC, but after that they can't win a 500 level event as top seeds! They each find a way to blow it from injury to just not being able to stave off other thirsty players who make them work for it! These upsets are ridiculous! Again, we're spoiled by the excellence over the years with Fedalovic, but each NG wave under-achieves; BIG TIME! :angry-face::fearful-face::astonished-face::fearful-face:

@Moxie Getting the better? He's blasting Tits with a 2 break lead 4-0. Bring on Lil Bit & Shelby
Well, it was "only" 3-0 when I wrote that...I didn't want to overstate it. But yes, Tsitsipas is getting shellacked now, by virtue of the tennis.
