Nadal's new motto: Winning Ugly!

Please; that's been his mainstay since the beginning! It's always been UGLY IMO! :cover :nono  :dodgy: :p :ras:

Disagree, but it has been hard to watch lately. He just looks so......uncomfortable on the court.

You run the risk of falling into the category of people that think that tennis is a beauty contest, or an art. Perhaps you're already there. It's a sport, and the win is the goal. Styles are different, and folks will like some style more than others, as observers. What you find ugly, I find thrilling. What floats your boat can bore me to tears. But you pound the boards about what you consider "ugly." It's insulting to my aesthetic, frankly, that you do that. I never tell you that "serve and...(nothing)" is illegitimate to me, or "ugly." It's another way of winning, even if I don't like it. Why do you have to campaign so hard against the way that Nadal plays? If you love tennis so much, can't you at least appreciate why and how he has won 14 Majors, and so much else? There are plenty of players I don't love, but I can appreciate the effectiveness of their game without insulting it. OK, I'm guilty of calling certain players "boring." But not ugly, with the hair raised up off of the back of my head. There is not player whose game insults me to the point of hysteria.

I have no shame in showing my age and narrow-mindedness when it comes to tennis being about grace and effortless movement! I grew up watching the best in the game who didn't have to grunt and towel off after every point! We had Goolagong, Maria Bueno, obviously Evert and Navratilova for the ladies! On the men's side they were just as athletic and graceful with Nastase, Borg, Laver, Edberg, and Roger now! All of these players were winners BTW! Call me a snob and worse; I'll take that designation! I'm not going to change my mind about it ever; SORRY! When it comes to absolutely "ugly" and unwatchable tennis, Nadal, Murray, Serena, Venus, Sharapova, and Azarenka are at the top of the list! Arms and legs flailing away like "Raggedy Ann and Andy" dolls is just not what I want to see for any real length of time; unless of course going down in flames like Rafa these today! - :cover :nono  :dodgy:

OK, you're a snob. And inconsistent. Nastase was a terrible brat, if you want to talk about tactics, and Venus is really beyond reproach, IMO. Otherwise, dream of a tennis game where S&V leads the way, no one grunts, and a baseline game has no toe-hold or future. Good luck with that.

Great job by young Lucas, his first SF in a 500 event!

Although iits been very sunny today and the majority of the week, my concerns is how Rafa will handle the "conditions" when "tte Fog" rolls in this weekend, especially on Sunday.

I would consider myself as fair:snicker..

Today Rafa's bh was a lot better. Its fh was hit or miss , but its starting to gain a little more depth. His serve and return of serves still is very below average. So let's put this in terms for a job or work, Rafa is just doing enough on the tennis court to keep the" lights on". I expect him to struggle this weekend if he doesn't raise his game level, IMO.

Thanks for that information. I saw he did two double faults (yesterday he did a lot worse :speechless:) but I hope tomorrow (I'm going day by day) he keeps the "lights on", he has surprised us enough

Nadal and F3 are heading for another showdown. How big of a boost would this tournament title be for Nadal?

Likely. Pouille has already has his upset, unless Operatic Fabio shows up. And Rafa should take out Seppi. IF Rafa wins, beating FFS, esp., it'll boost his confidence, but that'll only go so far unless his form tightens up. If he should lose, either in the SF or F, it has to be considered something of a disaster, I'm afraid.

We'll see, Rafa first has to play against Seppy who if I remember well has demolished Federer not too long ego and if he wins then he has to play the final against Fog or Pouille which before i would have thought it would be an easy win but at the present I can't see it that way :s:puzzled

Interesting view of "demolished". Beat yes, demolished, no.

Seppi won 6-4 7-6(5) 4-6 7-6(5). 2 points difference in those 2 tiebreak sets and it was the same score in reverse so not quite a demolition.

Looks like Rafa is experiencing gas or some type of stomach cramps, he should be okay
