Good effort by Ferrer but he sends a bit gassed. Rafa was up a notch from recent - and I think he'll get even better...

Barely showing a pulse is a good effort now  Hopefully the Ferret puts on a decent show from here on out, I want a Roger-Daveeeed semi if such a miracle exists!

He never stopped trying, so that's a good effort by any definition. But he was up against an improved Rafa and he looked gassed. No shame in any of that...

Alrighty you can just come out and say it is a great effort if someone wins a single point vs. Rafa. I bet RG 08 was a great effort from Roger and we all saw how heroic he was in having a 65 grass court winning streak snapped.

In fairness, there's nothing wrong with praising a guy for his effort even when he's zonked. In fact, it's better than the dummy lyrics some people are singing about match fixing. Ferrer is a trier, but he was up against a guy punching closer to his own weight. It was a solid, contained performance by Rafa, but a lot of Daveeds errors were clearly the work of a tired man.

As for Roger in 2008, I expect he tried, regardless of how heavy his whipping was. I'd expect the same from Rafa...

I didn't get to see the match. Was it a matter of Ferrer laying an egg, or did Nadal step up his game from where it was in Paris?

Hi Bob,

A bit of both. If you read through the thread, you'll get a good idea of what happened.

As he should be, not to renew a recent debate but Rafa is the deserved #1 this year.

Thanks. I'm curious to see how Rafa performs now against Stan.

That should be interesting, too, considering the surface. Nothing is a given for Rafa here.

Nobody was being serious about match-fixing.

The matches weren't fixed, but the outcome was convenient for both of them. Im pretty sure they had different priorities.

That does not take away that this was an incredibly poor showing by Ferrer. Understandible, yes, but poor nonetheless.

Roger v Novak later. I have to say, I doubt Nole will start so slowly this time, and it'll be up to Roger to maintain his levels for longer than a set and a half.

I expect Nole to win in straights...

Yeah, I hope Front was watching. While Rafa was waiting back-stage and the announcer was going through his spiel, he musta tugged both front and back a half a dozen times. It was spectacular, if you like that sort of thing. I know that of all his tics, they're the ones Front likes best! :snigger

I actually agree here. I'm just hoping Roger can win some games and make it competitive for tie-breaking purposes.
