Some controversy as Evans, fighting hard to hold serve at 5-5 all, has stopped play complaining to the umpire that the lines are slippery from some spots of rain. Surely that's the umpires call to make.

play has resumed, while at the same time the retractable roof is being closed. Quite extraordinary. Evans held now Bernard is serving to get the set into another tiebreak. Can he do it ?

Evans through, wins the tiebreak in style and a place in the R16.

Federer breaks in the fifth game and up to now he fired a winner each two points. If he could maintain this level...

He's putting on some pace on his serve and backhand at the moment. Interesting stuff.

I wasn't expecting that sort of start. This set is crucial. Can't see Tomas getting back into the match if Roger wins it

And Federer starts the second with a break. Level dropped a bit, already on the last game of the first...

Good so Good by Roger so far. If he does win this match in straight sets versus a dangerous but hot and cold opponent, it would really serve notice to the critics out there that at 35 he's career is far from over.

^Yep. The guy is playing quite well. A ton of winners and a lot of balls were Berdych could barely touch his racquet on...

With a collective sigh of relief from the Federer fan base, he closes the second. I feared for the worst when he missed that easy volley on 15-0

One thing I just realised... and it makes me feel more confident. Roger hasn't even faced a breakpoint...

This has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've seen in some time. He's a freaking 35yr old for gawds sake!!

no 35yo should play this level of tennis, at least i've never seen. then again he doesn't want to peak too early....

Yup agreed. My first thought after that was... has he peaked too soon? I still make Kei the favourite. It's a real gauntlet he's going to have to face

Agreed, we have to judge things objectively independently who is our fav and that's why I think that every player has a different situation. For example Roger has been many months out of the court and I understand that at 35 years old is more difficult to return and to do his best though I wouldn't be surprised if he would beat Berdych. Rafa this time has not been so long out of the court like the previous injuries and as more than you think that he has the same age as Roger (miles) I can't be more disagree, 5 years apart is a big difference and remember that after has been so many times without paying he has missed many tournaments so his body is not too overburdened like others which have played many more tournaments than him and if he is now healthy even better and that's why I think he can do well it doesn't matter his bad last two years results. And I don't say that he is going to win this AO but neither he would go out soon

In fact I never bought that miles thing. One on hand I am sure Nadal has run more miles in the court than Federer (even considering the age difference), but we do not have a miles bank from where we save or spend them. More miles simply mean, in general, more chances of injury, and that part history has shown. But, yes, Federer is five years older, period. But you have to admit he is dealing with age as good as it gets. When was the last time you saw a 35 years old dispatch a top 10 player the way he just did? And before you say anything about Berdych´s level, it wasn´t stelar, yes, but the guy made only 14 UFE. That´s quite a few for a 3 sets match.

By the way, I was plain wrong with my prediction of Federer losing. But I do not want to be plain wrong two times in a row, so come on, Zverev, do something about it.

^Personally I subscribe to the miles in the bank thing. Just look at Wayne Rooney. Agassi is another example of a player who was able to play longer than normal because of his extended periods away from the game. Whatever the reason is, and @mrzz makes a good point about the more miles you run the higher the chance of injury. I think that most people would subscribe to the view that Rafa has suffered more wear and tear than Roger. It's not controversial

Kei at this point is the better overall player, Fed's level today is not realistic and i think he is surprised himself. Especially against a guy who doesn't fear him and has blown him off the court many times before.
