Personally, I think Roger is the GOAT, not just for the number of slams he has won. The way he plays tennis, the weeks at number one, the semi final streak, the versatility and the grand slam finals he has reached are also important when considering who is GOAT. Someone may overtake Roger's slam count, but I will still consider Roger the GOAT. He plays tennis in a unique way.
He’s without a doubt the best player I’ve ever seen

I know mate, but nobody predicts the last slam win after they've won it... I think the old champ left a lot out there today. Just glad him came through but unsure how often he can keep going back to the well.

I hear you. And the fact he didn’t say see you next year was notable

No, can't make too much out of it. Rog is a cry-baby. He cries after wining, he cries after losing, he cries for everything.

^ I agree. The reason why I think he's still got more left is that he'll go home and reflect on the fact that he hasn't even had to play his best in his last 2 slam wins. He'll think, fuck it, let's go for more. If he had smoked Cilic today I would think it more credible he would call it a day

Can't read too much into it. In all of that emotions, they don't remember to say all the stuff. For example, Murray even forgot to
thank his Mom (and former coach) after winning Wimbledon.
Replied similarly. Had not seen your post.

They'll remember the rivalry Moxie. But I wager they'll remember the trio of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic rather than just the Fedal rivalry. They will call it the golden age. But most of all they'll look at the slam count, they'll see Roger at the top. It will be shown when new greats are moving up the slam count. What they'll talk about most is how that Swiss fella Federer crushed it
Nice try inserting Djokovic. No way. Federer doesn't get out of the two-way rivalry.

It seems we're losing sight of Roger Federer's accomplishments in pursuit of the mythical GOAT. Roger Federer is a fantastic tennis player, and an astonishingly accomplished one. Why does he have to be better than any one has ever been in the history of tennis? He's pretty freaking good. Anyway.

I gave up getting involved in GOAT debates - at least with men's tennis a longtime ago. If there is a GOAT then I was pretty clear who it was and didn't feel the need to persuade anybody else. It got to the stage where I didn't even think there was a debate so couldn't be bothered wasting energy on it.

Well-comfortable in your own knowledge. That's cool.

Roger now has 96 titles. Need 4 more to reach 100. It is certainly doable this year.

Lol! A try? I'm not trying anything. The whole debate is silly. I'm only going on with this because it's the only resource you have. Let's look at some rather obvious facts. Federer has 4 slams more than Rafa right? But Rafa leads the H2H. But Rafa has 4 slams more than Novak. And Novak leads the H2H. Now using your argument, by the transitive property, Novak has to be relevant. Yet I for one have always maintained that Rafa is still ahead of Djokovic :D

By your very own arguments you make Novak relevant. But I'm not even arguing that point. I'm just telling you what I think people will focus on when this era is past. They'll talk about the trio when describing the era. They'll talk about Roger's slam record when looking at history.

Of course there'll be people like you, saying.. "don't forget Rafa" but those sounds will be dismissed as people just look at the data on their screens...

The data on their screens and in their short memories is deleting Djokovic. Who won the Major before this one? Rafa. The rivalry that will live in memory from this era is the Fedal. It's a brand.

Sorry Moxie :) I'm pretty sure you know you're wrong there. We're not talking about tomorrow. We're talking about decades from now. No one's going to know who won a slam last between Novak and Rafa. They'll just see the numbers. You might want to trivialise Novak. But a guy who won 4 in a row doesn't get dismissed easily. And if your narrative of H2H mattering is to make any sense it gets dismissed even less easily. Face it... if you want to argue H2H matters, Novak cannot be dismissed. You I fear are trying to have your cake and eat it. Get over it... it's eaten! :lol6:

Nobody will be deleting Djokovic... he's an all-time baller.

But, the whole concept of legacy is interesting to me... because half of the kids nowadays don't even know who Churchill or Roosevelt are...

I'd say your legacy lasts as long as anyone cares to remember... generally about 3 or 4 generations.

It's all good Moxie. Let the bitterness out:). God knows I've been bitter all too many times due to your boy.

This era will be remembered for having 3 of the greatest ever including arguably the 2 greatest of all time. Djokovic certainly is a part of the discussion even if he is truly done. Ultimately while the Fedal rivalry will be a big part of it people will dissect their careers and records and currently Nadal is very far behind. I hope Rog still sees him as a threat in that regard because I still do though chances are thankfully getting less and less.
