Not looking good for Bernie. He is standing upright returning serves.

Definitely something wrong with Tomic. Pulled a hamstring I think?

Nadal decides to step up a bit and takes the break. Seems to be able to read Tomic's serve now.

Tomic got injured on literally the second or third point of the match. Very unfortunate. Shame. It could have been a great match for a first round.

Tough to gauge anything re: Rafa's level. He served very good though so that was nice to see.

Meanwhile Simon is playing his AO trademark five-setter early this year. In the first round.

Yes, it looked like it had quite some potential. Good serving by Tomic too despite the injury.

Real shame about Weekend at Bernie's. Came home to check the score and saw he retired. Bad for him and the crowd and actually for Nadal too for not getting any proper match play yet.

He won't get any the second round either. He is playing a 17 year old.

Simon fended off at least two match points to prevail in the fifth: 14 - 16. Fifth year (out of seven) he is playing a five-setter in Melbourne. Must be sadomasochistic, if you keep doing this in these conditions.

Simon sure loves five setters alright. Playing Cilic who also won a 5 setter but Simon is likely toast given how long his match was.

…Hulk, in the guise of a scrawny French tennis player. :snigger

Bummer about Hewitt, and Bernie. I was having a nice nap on the sofa until Rafa started, which looked to have some potential for a couple of minutes. The commentators were speculating that he was over-training of late, and that some groin/thigh strain was already there. (Explaining his poor showing in the final v. Delpo in Sydney, too.) Could be something in there. Only saw a bit of Murray, but he escaped with an easy first round, too. Seemed sharp.

del potro made it into rd 2..i watched him lose the 1st set tiebreak 7-1 and I was fearing the worst, he played same time as murray in late afternoon at 41+c 106f...

either in that tb or near the end of set one there was a 21 shot rally. :dodgy:..it looked like no fun, no fun at all..NO FUN.

So much for the 10-20% chance.
Doesn't this happen a lot? Players pushing themselves too far when facing top ranked opponents and injuring themselves...

In fairness, it happened right after a routine groundstroke (it was his first groundstroke after the serve). It have been a case of poor warm-up though. A groin injury that early in the match is typically the result of not warming-up properly.

Hewitt-Seppi was entertaining and it was the sort of match and atmosphere that makes Hewitt's AO matches feel more important than they actually are. He had a match point which Seppi saved with an ace. Too bad, I wish he would have reached the 4th as he vs. Nadal would have been cool to see, as would the two matches on the way to get there.

On a sidenote: Hewitt is playing Doubles with Patrick Rafter?!

Disappointed Hewitt lost but Seppi is a crafty and very fit player so it's not that surprising. Hope there are streams of his doubles match with Rafter.

Shame about Tomic's injury as it looked like being a very good match if he had full mobility. Even so what was played was entertaining viewing.
