Regardless of the actual result, I really don't remember any other time where so many people were so sure a guy ranked outside the top 100 (and who has never been inside it) would handily beat one guy consistently inside the top 10.
Did anyone say “handily?” Or “sure?” But the elements for upset are there.

Upset Alert averted as Rune wins the 5th set 64, playing a tricky opponent, he will play Matteo Berrettini in his next match

A first main draw win at a slam for Q Learner Tien, winning in 5 sets over Ugo Carabolli.
19 yo Tien awaits the winner of Medvedev and WC Kasidt Samrej, who have unexpectedly split the first 2 sets on RLA

Monfils wins the 5th set 64, he broke Perricard in his first service game of the 5th set and held on to win, Monfils didnt face a single BP in 28 service game
Perricard needs to work on his return game, also shot selection let him down at times in the match

I just tuned in. A guy is killing Meddy with the dropshots.
Meddy has finally woken up and wins the 4th set 61, 2 sets all, going 5 sets.
Meddy should received a fine for showing his frustration on the net camera, also racquet abuse on the net
Meddy wins the 5th set 62

Yeah, people need to chill with Djokovic's demise. Barring injury, I'm almost certain Djokovic is going to win again. I mean, didn't Monfils just win a title? And he hasn't made it to the 2nd weekend of a slam in a while. Djokovic made the final of Wimbledon last year. He's not going to suddenly stop winning unless he has an injury.

I felt Roger had a chance of winning until he suffered that injury at the 2020 Australian Open. I knew it was over when he came back the following year and he clearly wasn't the same player. Same with Rafa post-2022 US Open.
All I know is that I don't like what I see. He is looking old and slow, like he lost a step or two. He seems like he is running on fumes after a few longer rallies. In other words looking pretty much beatable. I was switching between the channels and watched Alcaraz too. It's a higher level for sure and much faster tennis.

If Machac beats Opelka, I'm expecting Chech to give Novak troubles. That said, should Novak and Alcaraz meet in QF, I don't think Novak will be able to beat Spaniard. The biggest reason why Novak won that OG final match is because his serve was on insane level. There is no way he repeats that in BO5. Once his serve breaks down, Alcaraz will be cruising like in a Wimbledon final.

There's some serious ball crushing early on between Rublev and Fonseca.

Rublev has "responsibility" written on his shoe. Does it mean no "self harming" anymore?

Oh, I wasn't referring only to this forum (but yes, in some posts I could sense some aura of inevitability).

But I can say for myself, for some reason I am pretty confident the kid will win (btw, I like Rublev). Here in Brazil, apart from the ones completely carried away, even some level people privately are showing a lot of confidence he will win this match. My own trainer, guy with a lot of professional experience that hardly gets ahead of himself, said one word about this match: upset.

Of course the head says the seed will win, but...

4 all in the first, and Fonseca still in first gear.

Edit. TB in the first

Fonseca goes up a few gears and takes the first, 7x1 in the first set TB, with a handful of winners. The kid is for real.

Rublev breaks on the third, but Fonseca breaks immediately back.

He fired the two greatest returns of serve of all time in this set, and I mean it...

Nice, holds - just barely. Loved that drop-shot to go up 30-15. Nice to see that variety.

High quality third set goes to the TB. Rublev playing slightly better.
