Let’s hope Kokkinakis grew up while recovering from his many injuries. I recall seeing him years ago when he first came on tv. While he seemed to have a promising future as a pro, he didn’t have admirable personality qualities a la Tomic.

I was a walking TV Guide back then and I can unequivocally assure you, The AO 1st showed up on ESPN around '83 or '84! We were lucky to get the SF & Finals on the Networks for our own USO! Breakfast At Wimbledon in '79 turned the corner for national interest! At times an event was on TV almost every weekend; esp. leading up to the USO! The AO back then was little more than a "closed" Nat'l Champ. with draws full of Aussies and a sprinkling of other nations represented! It didn't help when Mark Edmonson upset Newcombe in '76! Then there was the move from 1st Major in Cal.Yr. to the last to entice Borg to come "down under!" It was unfortunate there was so much going against the event w/ high winds, flying bugs, & choppy grass! It was hard to take seriously early on w/ a cast of winners never heard of or since! Players like Martina & Chris on the ladies' side w/ Wilander, Lendl, & Edberg started making AO more important to the season in early 80's! It still hasn't hit the Networks outside of News! :-)2:popcorn
Thanks. So the 1975 men's final remains the only time an Australian Open was shown on american main TV (CBS) apart from ESPN subscription.

i think this is between zverev, medvedev.... if i had to pick someone else, alcaraz.... still young but progressing fast and has big enough game to beat these guys. Nadal, just don't think so....
I don't think anyone disagrees that Medvedev has the best shot, and Zverev has a good one. But Nadal is the only player in the tournament that has ever won it. Not to mention 20 Majors. So putting Alcaraz above Nadal is a bit funny. I like Alcaraz down the road, though.

Looks like there's very little late-night ESPN coverage until SF or later, unless you have ESPN+. LOL. Good thing we started streaming everything as needed years ago :D
I am appalled by this, and have complained to ESPN. (Yes, I am that old lady!) No matter how late night and no matter who takes the coverage, I've never known it not to be covered, since we entered the cable days. It was always somewhere...ESPN, TC, NBC. Not covering it at all, except behind a pay wall is treating us all like chumps.

I'm taking your word that we got that! It would be the time for it to happen after Connors' 1974! He was defending vs Newcombe! I missed it! :popcorn
You don't have to. Take a look at the 1975 Australian final video i posted earlier and at the three minute point, the Seven Network tennis commentator says words to the effect, the final was being shown by CBS. That '75 final was lawn tennis at it's very best! in particular the fourth set drama.

nadal simply missed too much time last year, meanwhile, medvedev, zverev were playing all throughout and staying match tough. I predict rafa doesn’t make finals.. just needs a few months of match play. He will be ready for french

BTW Craig Tiley is no where to bee seen at the AO,usually on the first day of play he is everywhere, doing interviews etc?
Maybe he is still hiding in some underground bunker:)

Definitely! Probably singing 80s ballads in the dark.

Tough luck for Casper Ruud as he injured his ankle during practice therefore he is withdrawing from the 2022 Australian Open. A lucky loser will take his spot.

Biggest winner: Jannik Sinner. He has a golden opportunity to reach his 2nd Slam QF. He does potentially face Murray in the 3rd Round, but I think he has a good chance to beat Murray if they meet.

Also, he is in the Tsitsipas quarter, so Sinner has the opportunity to reach his 1st Slam SF, as long he plays well, of course!

Laaksonen has some good game, and he's found his legs in the 2nd set, but basically just out-classed.

This is destined to be a trainwreck of an event IMO! We lost a bunch of top players already from injury to WD's and deportation; now seeds dropping like flies! How can Harris defeat Nadal, then lose to a WC challenger?? I expected more! :bomb::sick::astonished-face::popcorn

With Ruud withdrawal due to ankle injury...he will be replaced by Roman Safiulin who enters the draw as a 5th LL will face Molcan

Always with the breathless outrage. Are we really going to believe that the tournament is compromised now because Lloyd Harris is out?

Basilashvili suddenly making more of a match of it, after losing the first set at 1, but now he got a break in the 2nd.

Murray serving for the 3rd set, and Isner holds off Cressy in the TB for force a 3rd.

Murray gets the break back in the 4th. He really needs to win this in 4, one feels. He's looking creaky.
