To be fair,Thanasi has had his fair share of injuries for the last 5 years,he received a WC into the AO this year.He hasn't played much tennis on a regular basis for some years/
I imagined as much as it took me a minute to remember him. He’s not the only one, but now that he is back I’m sure he will take things into consideration. I always wanted to throttle Thiem for loading his schedule. I was like you don’t need to play 6 clay court tournaments before Roland Garros.

Well clay is taxing on the body, when you get older it is 'insane' to play 6 clay tournaments before RG.I shake my head with all the clay tournaments Rafa plays before RG,he will turn 36 in June,so I hope he doesnt play all the clay tournaments before RG,quite frankly I dont think he will.

BTW Craig Tiley is no where to bee seen at the AO,usually on the first day of play he is everywhere, doing interviews etc?
Maybe he is still hiding in some underground bunker:)

He should be fired because it's clear that he tried to sneak players into Australia with the help of the Victorian government despite the federal government telling him months ago that only vaccinated players can play.

i think this is between zverev, medvedev.... if i had to pick someone else, alcaraz.... still young but progressing fast and has big enough game to beat these guys. Nadal, just don't think so....

I would believe he would be on a contract.I would imagine that the board of Tennis Australia will look into the matter after the AO concludes.

We'll see how amused all of you are "down under" when the AO is historically criticized for this unnecessary drama! I'll probably miss it! :face-with-hand-over-mouth: :-)2
Go and find your sense of humor..is was a joke....LOL!
I dont think the AO will suffer by your absence:)

Looks like there's very little late-night ESPN coverage until SF or later, unless you have ESPN+. LOL. Good thing we started streaming everything as needed years ago :D

Why are you guys surprised by the lack of coverage? The AO has always been by far the least prestigious slam. Without the AO the slam tally would Nadal 19, Federer 14, Djokovic 11. Enough said. :good:

Thanasi came out as 'flat as a tack' remember too this is the first time he has played 2 tournaments before the AO.He did not have a lot of time to recover after winning the title in Adelaide.
Yes i saw parts of the first set and it look that way to me too. Perhaps in retrospect he should not have played last week.

That was shocking even with a need to talk American Football playoffs, Tennis Ch. wasn't playing any live matches! The event's been hurt!

I'll ask one more , has there ever been a year besides the 1975 final beamed live by CBS, where the australian open was shown on a commercial american channel like NBC or CBS or whatever else you have there ?

I think because he had good result the week before making the s/final,he may have felt fine, won the title and had a let down yesterday at the AO,it happens

Yes i just notice the final score. The lad only won seven games. Oh well he's 25 years young so it's still all a learning curve for the adelaidian. We're all very proud of his first ATP victory last week here.

I was a walking TV Guide back then and I can unequivocally assure you, The AO 1st showed up on ESPN around '83 or '84! We were lucky to get the SF & Finals on the Networks for our own USO! Breakfast At Wimbledon in '79 turned the corner for national interest! At times an event was on TV almost every weekend; esp. leading up to the USO! The AO back then was little more than a "closed" Nat'l Champ. with draws full of Aussies and a sprinkling of other nations represented! It didn't help when Mark Edmonson upset Newcombe in '76! Then there was the move from 1st Major in Cal.Yr. to the last to entice Borg to come "down under!" It was unfortunate there was so much going against the event w/ high winds, flying bugs, & choppy grass! It was hard to take seriously early on w/ a cast of winners never heard of or since! Players like Martina & Chris on the ladies' side w/ Wilander, Lendl, & Edberg started making AO more important to the season in early 80's! It still hasn't hit the Networks outside of News! :-)2:popcorn

Yet more players seem to skip the red dirt and grass of FO and W vs hardcourts of AO. Maybe AO has been harder to win given deeper fields?

nice analysis but another way to put it, who stands taller if we take away their dominant slam?

without FO
Nadal - 7
Novak - 18
Federer - 19

without AO (novak’s best slam)
Nadal - 19
Novak - 11
Federer - 14

without wimbledon (federer’s best slam)
Nadal - 18
Novak - 14
Federer - 12

lowest scores = most 1 dimensional. Rafa - 7, novak = 11, fed = 12

another measure is standard deviation, highest = most 1 dimensional

rafa 5.48
Novak 3.16
Fed 2.94
