Off topic...What's the deal with Wawrinka? Where has he been? Injured?

Sasha still won 2 Masters this season regardless and his name will forever sit there in the record books! That's the most outside the Big 4 in a decade!   :ptennis:
Very true. But I am not convinced he will be ranked this high at the end of next season.

I have been accused of being a "glass half empty" person more than a few times. :lulz2:. I think it IS lucky for him to have the opportunity because other players are injured. :D

What you fail to see is that the "luck" or "opportunity" was available to all the players who were in the draw at Bercy and Cincy. Still, only Grigor and Sock capitalized as opposed to Gasquet or Isner. You still have to do your part to win it. They don't hand the trophy to you just because many other top players are injured.

Roger has said before that he'd like to take his kids to the Olympics when he plays. Rio didn't work out (for more than one reason, I'm guessing. I doubt he'd have taken them to Brazil, given the health issues.) So if he gets a chance to have them all basically old enough to enjoy/remember the experience, I think Front is right that he'd take it.

This will never be a real event IMO! When you have winners like Massu, Rosset, and Puig, we're talking more a glorified exhibition like the figure skaters do to entertain the masses after the other events are done and the closing ceremonies are upon us! :p   o_O

I'm going to go with Sock...just because I'm really unimpressed by Dimitrov's cojones...ie, lack thereof...

We can agree that Dimitrov has a basic lack of cojones.

We can disagree on the notion of "luck." While this is an unusual year in the number of top players out with injury, it's not just "luck" that gets a player where they are, in a given moment in time. Even Federer and Nadal had some luck this year that Djokovic and Murray weren't there to capitalize on what was their 1-2 domination of 2016. You're a big Federer fan. Are you willing to say that 2017 was just lucky? No effort? No making hay when it opened up? Will you put an asterisk on everyone's year, because Murray and Djokovic should have featured more? If not, same applies to Dimitrov winning Cincy and Sock being where he is right now.

Just had a funny thought - if Thiem beats Goffin tomorrow...then 3 of the 4 semi-finalists will have single-handed backhands. When was the last time the 3 of 4 semi-finalists, in any event, were single handers? I'm sure there's some stats nut out there who knows the answer to that...

What's the diagnosis? And how long has he been out? Seems like forever. Any idea as to when he might come back?
Knee...I believe he had surgery. You can google that he's back on the practice courts. Looks like he might be ready for the coming season.

Knee injury. He pulled out at the USO for the rest of the season.
He confirmed he will come back in the new season

It wouldn't be longer than we'd see the same with the women maybe going back to Mandlikova, Shriver, Navratilova, & Novotna!

Who the hell cares? Funnier thought...When was the last time any of the four semi-finalists had two-handed forehands?

Hey, I freely admit Roger got lucky this year. And Roger himself actually addressed the "luck" he and Nadal have had this year in an interview when he was asked about that straight out.. May have been after Wimbledon or maybe Shanghai. He said yes, he and Nadal have benefited from Djokovic & Murray being out - but that the same was true for them last year when he and Nadal were out. I said it last year - if Federer hadn't been injured - no way in hell Murray gets to #1 because, at that point, he hadn't even been able to break Roger's serve since Cincy in 2014. So yes, Federer and Nadal got lucky this year, too. As the saying goes - sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Being in the right place at the right time sure don't hurt.

Anybody who loves the single-handed backhand cares that it's not D-E-A-D at the top of the men's game. You know...this IS a tennis board... :banghead: Crikey...

Jeebus. You're back in the late '80s/early '90s with that one. The fact that it's dead in the women's game makes sense because that's all about power and more power these days. 99.99% of them barely know where the net is. If they didn't have to pass it for the changeover they'd never go anywhere near it...

But...I just wanna say it...Justine Henin...her backhand was a true thing of beauty...

Don't much care about single or double handed backhands or forehands. Tennis is tennis.

And it's especially nice to be lucky AND good. Or actually great. That's fine if you're Rafa and Roger. Right place/right time: Dimitrov, Sock, a few others...is it really a knock on them? I agree they have to back it up. Other than that...do they deserve to be sniffed at for jumping through the window of opportunity? I don't think so. @Fiero425 is always complaining that they don't, and yet he seems to be sneering now, as well. Oh, well...lots of people are inconsistent.

Agreed. See 2009 French Open champion.

I appreciate The Next Gen and would just like them to back up "their promise!" So far the so called best talent has barely made a major final and a lot of the time not even own a Masters' event! Who's fault is that; mines because I don't give them enough love? I still relish and cringe with this era of play; seeing the ebbs and flows going on 47 yrs! I still live those past eras w/ a tape collection 2nd to none & access to everything else online! I still prefer to watch tennis when played more like a chess match, not an arena where attrition has taken the place of skill! :p  :ptennis:
