I think he's in the process of doing that now. He played 12 tournaments this year. Next year I bet he drops MIami and\or Stuttgart and skip the clay season again. He might play 10 tournaments. Then in 2019 - drop it to 8 and if he doesn't make the tour finals then he makes Basel his last tournament and rides off into the sunset...

With 2020 being an Olympic year, I can't see him retiring in 2019. 2020 is my guess.

Just saw that Roger beat Cilic in 3. At the start of the week - did anyone guess that Cilic would go 0-3 instead of Sock? Cuz I sure didn't see that coming. I didn't think he'd beat Roger but I didn't think he'd lose to Sock. Three 3-setters and he couldn't win the 3rd set in any of them. He may want to see if his mother knows any legit sports psychologist instead of home remedies for a cold...
I saw that coming. Every year, there's always a patsy that goes 0-for whatever. Cough drop has only won 1 match at tour finals in his life and in his H2H he has never beaten Sock.

His last year? He'll definitely play the AO because he's said in the past that the tourney - and Austrailia in general - has bean a lot to him (and his family) during his career. He'd probably play Dubai as well because it's been his training center\2nd home for nearly 2 decades. And he loves the IW and Shanghai events as well. So there's at least 9 that he'd probably play his last year...

I agree that those are all important and favorite events for him. But, as there are too many of them, I don't see him playing in all of them in his last year. It does not go together with the idea of phased retirement.

As a Fed fan, I would rather see him play Sock in the final rather than AZ so I’ll be rooting for Sock.

My opinion is that Fed won’t be chasing number one again. He will focus his attention on winning majors. He has learned his lesson. Trying to get the top ranking by playing Canada led to trouble he must want to avoid repeating.

Zverev making a mess out of his serve this set. I like Sock, but I want to see Zverev show his mettle in this YEC.

Sock it is.

Apparently Sock has a winning H2H against Grigor, but I think Grigor will win this time.

It turns out that Sasha took home less money than Chung (not to mention that he did not get to take home an Italian Model) in the end.

Group Pete Sampras was a real mess! It was all set up to make a comfortable path to the final for Rafa! The newbies are truly like fodder alone, but Sock's actually doing something! I'm shocked! Good for him!  :ptennis:

So Roger has to face one of Thiem or Goffin, then one of Grigor and Sock. He would really have to pull up lame to not win this title.

And how meaningless is that Dimitrov-Busta match tomorrow? The biggest flaw in the round robin format.

At some point, Roger will do a victory lap and hit all of the big tournaments, including the clay ones. That will not be next year. I buy the notion that clay bothers his knee. Also that he prefers to save himself for grass. As to Roger being the #2 on clay this past year, if he'd played it: maybe. But then he likely wouldn't have won Wimbledon, so what's the point? I don't think you can insert Roger as the #2 in a whole part of the year he didn't play, as an assumption, and then assume the rest of the year would have gone the same.
the chances of Roger playing clay tournaments especially ones that Nadal enters is about on par with Carol inviting Front for XMas dinner or DarthFed standing in an line to gets Rafa’s autographs..It aint happening

Nice job by Jack. I am happy to see him pulling through, especially because Zverev has enough fans and I felt Jack is not supported enough, even by Yankee fans.

The moment I saw the vast majority of folks so sure Sock had no chance I knew he was a lock for the semis.

It will also be played seriously. There is a lot of money and 200 points at stake.
Sure, $ and 200 pts., but I agree with El Dude that it's as close to "nothing to lose" as a tennis match gets. PCB just a free pass in, so he should play with abandon, but I think it was one reason that Fed/Cilic was so dull today...not enough at stake.
