I tought Gasquet had a 500 in his pocket. I knew he did't have a masters. 500 was doable for him, but now it seems too late to make it.
In the first week like today we see that anything can happen. It's like one big mixture of everything, young guys, old guys, no names, WCs, LLs, QFs, and they all have a chance for a few wins, you have guys playing each other without knowing much and what to expect from the other. There is almost always someone completely unexpectedly going on a run for a few rounds to make a story and some headlines. I see a lot of fun in that.
Today in RG was a clear example why I so much enjoy these early rounds in slams. It is so unpredictable when you compare it to the 2nd week. I know it is a big difference in amount of matches played in 1st and 2nd week, but I kind of sometimes feel bored by matches in the 2nd week. For instance, when you have 2 players who played before many times and 1 guy beats the other almost all the time, then you just know there is no suprise there and because of so low possibility of a favourite to go down it lacks a suspense. I find it very important, which is why I never like too much of domination in any sport. I guess some would agree about the domination part, but at the same time I also see people everywhere on social media going fanatic over their player and they want him to win all the time no matter what. I look at it and I say just chill out for a bit and enjoy the sport.
In this RG I would like to see Novak win, but at the same time if he meets Fognini or later Thiem, I will probably cheer for underdogs to push him to the very limits and then whoever wins it doesn't matter much anymore. They are both winners to me, they give their best and we as audience walk out fulfilled.
