I think BB summed it up rather well. Besides, it's a coaching carousel these days for high profile players. They can afford to pick and choose who they want, suck them dry of what knowledge they have to impart (not unlike a vampire) and move on all the wiser. That's the business.

Andy Murray admits splitting up with his coach Ivan Lendl left him gutted.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/10713034/Andy-Murray-admits-splitting-up-with-his-coach-Ivan-Lendl-left-him-gutted.html

"We sat down on Saturday evening, we went and had dinner,” said Murray, who will open his Sony Open campaign on Friday against Australian Matthew Ebden. “We chatted for an hour about other stuff, and then we chatted about us moving forward.”

Issues had already been bubbling up for a couple of months about Lendl’s availability. In 2012, their first year together, he had spent 25 weeks at Murray’s side. Last season, that number slid to 20. And in 2014, Murray knew, it was going to fall still further, as Lendl took a growing interest in playing his own matches on the seniors’ tour.

Murray explained: “If I went and spoke to whoever, Rod Laver, and said, ‘Look I’d love you to work with me’, and he said, ‘Yeah I’d love to work with you too but I can only be available for one week’, I would say, ‘Well, you can’t make a difference in one week’.
“So ... it wasn’t like Ivan was saying one week. But I just feel like, to make a change and to make a difference, you need to spend a decent amount of time with the player. Ivan completely understands that as well. And that was why we decided to stop working together, because it wasn’t going to be of benefit to anyone doing the job half-baked. It had to be done properly. That’s what Ivan’s like.”

Murray said. “He was a big part of my life. And the next couple of days on the court were not particularly fun. I was gutted but I still think the guy is great. It’s not like anything has changed there.

“We both agreed it was a nice conversation over dinner. He is going to come and watch my matches here. I will be disappointed for a few weeks but you have to move on. Who knows, maybe it is the spark that I need.”

Andy has spoken further on this, on the BBC website, and again the indications are that it was wholly amicable...

Nothing interesting. PR Drivel. NO info on the thought process behind the firing. No insight what so ever.

This CLEARLY tells me it was a FIRING due to lack of availability.

There is no WE decided..Murray decided.

Probably because insight would be unnecessary. He explained the situation without going into details, and that was the right thing. There probably isn't much insight anyway.

Luxi, you're looking to gossip. If Lendl was make himself less available, we could also say he was giving Andy no choice. It seems to me it was both amicable and mutual in the sense that Lendl wanted to busy himself more elsewhere and Andy didn't want less commitment from his coach.

You can call it a FIRING with big loud capitalised bullets, but really, it seems ordinary and expedient on both sides - and I bet they both stayed after for dessert too...

I should have phrased things better. I agree.

This is how it probably went down:

Murray: I don't think I can retain you as my coach without you being available for every event.

Lendl: Hmm. Yeh, i can't with my schedule.

Murray: Ok, then I think we need to move on.

Lendl: Uh, Ok, I guess that is best if you think so.

So Murray, by his own words initiated the split to to a lack of satisfaction with Lendl's availability.
So it becomes "a mutual" decision because Lendl did not argue the point?

I am also confused why so many are mixing up the terms "amicable" and "mutual". One party can make a decision to end a relationship and it can still be on friendly terms. I have lost jobs, ended business and personal relationships not of my own choice but respected the others decision and maintained friendly discourse.

Murray made the decision. Period.

Lendl realized he Murray was right, he could not continue to coach by proxy, shook hands and said see ya around. It is not that complicated.

They mutually agreed that Lendl couldn't coach to his maximum with a reduced schedule, and then mutually agreed the best thing was for Andy to scroll through his fancy iPhone while Ivan scrolled through the dessert menu.

There's no confusion over "mutual" and "amicable". It happens all the time in business. These two are fond of each other, that much is clear, but Lendl had run his course with the commitment - and Andy agreed....

There was no "mutual" split IMO. Those are mythical...

IMO Murray is a cheap bastard and figured why pay...he got what he needed. Or so he thinks.

Lendl's quotes are pure and utter PR crafted crap so everybody saves face.

Looking back this is no surprise. The way Murray acted in Acapulco, he had already made his decision...

Where do you get that? IMO that comes out of nowhere and is just your speculation.

I'm entitled to speculate.

I just think Murray is a guy who does not like to be told what to do. He was throwing
childish tantrums in Mexico as away to establish his independence,

Everyone is entitled to speculate, though "cheap bastard" seems a bit harsh, since you're just guessing. (You'd do better to lay that one on Djokovic, who did actually refuse to continue to pay the bill requested by that doctor who changed his career around. Seems not such a smart move, in retrospect.)

Commentators have been making much of Lendl playing on the seniors tour, and I see he has a new academy. My suspicion is that the quotes are rather right: Lendl has other interests. And as Iona says, they've mutually spring boarded each other to better things in tennis. I have a hard time thinking that Lendl was kicked to the curb.

I know there is a problem when someone thinks like that....

So far almost all splits have been claimed as 'mutual', oh yeah they must be all genuine and not PR, or else we are just speculating.....

how about Lendl actually did set out to get Murray over his slam draught and it's mission accomplished so he wanted to move on? i believe Lendl when he said he saw a lot of himself in Murray, especially in the sense that Andy also got to 4 Slam finals without winning one and had real desire to 'get it done' for him...

Not a big fan of Bodo. This piece doesn't say who did what, simply states the way both have benefitted from their time together...

Lendl said he will always be in Andy's corner and is backing up. No surprise.

No surprise but some posts have been a joke on here.
Seems mutual & amicable for Lendl to be in the Murray team box so soon after GSAM.
Just saying.

Lendl got interested in being back in tennis himself and didn't have the time any longer to work with Andy. So now Andy is looking for a new Coach. They are still friends which is the good news from the story. And now I wonder who Andy will get for a new Coach?

I was thinking something similar, Sid. Federer did without a coach a few times in his career and it didn't harm him. Andy has always been known for having an entourage, but maybe he'll try squeeze the next months out alone...
