I don't think this got discussed, but there was a big kerfuffle at DC this weekend in the Chile v. Belgium tie of Garin v. Bergs. Wondering what people think. Bergs hit Garin in the cheek/eyesocket? with his shoulder while celebrating his late break of serve as he approached the sideline for the change of ends. He got a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct, but was not defaulted for hurting Garin. Everyone agrees it was unintentional, but these things usually are. Only that, usually the ball is struck or the racquet is thrown in anger and frustration, and usually the players are on the court. And Davis Cup does seem to encourage a raucous atmosphere, and going to the team at changeovers. Garin, after being treated and cleared to play, refused to play on and was eventually defaulted for time violations, giving Belgium the win over Chile. The article below includes a video of the incident.

Bergs should have been defaulted. It's ridiculous that umpires can't just stick with the rule book and apply the rules when things like this happen.

Garin did exaggerate, but in those cases I don't see how you cannot simply enforce the rules in place. You can discuss if the rules are good or not, but you need to be as objective as you can. It is pretty similar to Djokovic's defaulting in Us open 2020. The moment you start interpreting what is written in black and white, you open a can of worms you will never be able to close.

Vavassouri just beat Felix AA after splitting sets, FAA had to retire with an injury.

Such a pity as FAA seemed to be garnering some momentum and I was curious how he would stack up in a potential R16 with Carlitos…

I was looking forward to this match up too. Pity that FAA struggles to have longer stretches when he plays good and stays healthy.

I hope we get to see Rune Alcaraz match. Rune looked sharp against Sonego and could trouble Carlos, maybe even upset him?

I was waiting for someone to bring up Djokovic. It's just the same. He didn't mean to hurt that woman, but he did. He shouldn't have stuck that ball in frustration. Now, I've never seen some defaulted for simple exuberance, and injuring the opponent with their body, but it does seem the same letter of the law. An extraneous, unnecessary gesture causes harm to another. The rule doesn't care what you intended by it. And yes, Garin was rather a baby about the whole thing.

The corresponding schedule for the preceding ATP1000 Toronto this year, which end with finals on a "Thursday" ......No Words!

Medvedev v Q Bellucci about to start, I would be surprised if Medvedev lost, though stranger things have happened in Meddys matches lately :)

Belluci wins the 1st set 63, just a great first set of tennis against Meddy, showed his 'variety' and had Meddy guessing, bringing Meddy into the net
Well done young man! the million dollar question is 'can he keep this up'

the dominant toe injury can be tricky. Hopefully it's just a sprain, torn ligaments or turf toe can be more nagging than painful..

Meddy when your opponent is trying to serve and volley against you, why in the hell are you standing with the ball boys, there is no way you can return Madness!
Plus 5 foot faults against you so far in this match

The 2nd set between Meddy v Belluci 6 games all, TB for the 2nd set
Just when I thought Meddy had lifted his game in the 2nd set, he goes back to his old ways of trying to grind down his opponents?
Meddy has just run out of idea's in this TB
Belluci leading 4-1
Back level at 5 all with Belluci over presssing
Belluci MP with a 2nd serve on Meddy serve
6 all
SP for Meddy 7-6
Meddy breathes a sigh of relief turns the TB 76(6) around going 3
