Not sure how badly affected Alcaraz is by his elbow but he faces a tough opener against Struff, who despite recent injuries also has been playing pretty well and for me at least is one of the best volleyers on tour. If the grass plays fast the first week it's a tricky one to call. Greater than 3.5 sets is probably the safest bet I guess and pays better than Struff to win a set also. A brave person may choose Struff to win but not sure how much the elbow is affecting Alcaraz.

There’s the question of the elbow, and the fact that Alcaraz has only won 50% of his matches on grass. Meaning he has won exactly one match on grass. I’d say Struff has a good chance.

Borna Coric has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a shoulder injury, ( poor guy cant take a break, after being out from the tour with shoulder surgery). He will be replaced by a LL from qualifying.

Alcaraz lost both his matches at Hurlingham, I know it is a exho, still one match to Tiafoe and the other to Ruud of all players, he already stated he needs more matches on grass, Struff is a hard first rd match for him.

Definitely. Struff and Wawrinka to win their opening matches is a distinct possibility. Either that or both go 4 or 5 sets.

That is a shame. Speaking of Coric, where is @JesuslookslikeBorg these days? Hopefully we'll see him around for Wimbo.

I was watching a YouTube video earlier on with Wilander, McEnroe, Becker and Lendl - there’s two of them, both very good - and Mac asked Mats why he always downplayed his chances every time, including before the French Open. Mats liked to keep his powder dry. I remember mats before the FO final going on about Ruud having the Scandinavian mentality. Perhaps Ruud is going to surprise us all at Wimbledon? Bloke has a big serve, that can keep him in matches until he gains his grass feet?

I suspect he may be deliberately understating his chances…

Well I am out of Ruud and his grass court abilities,he hasn't won a grass court match on tour, until he proves me otherwise

Well he’s just turned 19, what has he played, one and a half full seasons on the tour and there was no grasscourt season in 2020. Weirdly enough, his being slightly shorter (5-11 ?) won’t hurt him on the grass, and his movement is exceptional which is what you need on the pasture.

I dunno, I feel that because he lost to Zverev in Paris his stock has dropped way too low in many people’s eyes. This is still the player who’s beaten like a dozen top ten players , including Nadal, Novak, Tsitspas, Zverev & Berrettini this year alone.

Not gonna lie, Struff could be a very tricky first round opponent for him, but I’m more concerned about his elbow than anything. If he’s rested and recharged, would love to see him and Fritz go at in the 4th round.

Moxie,

Seeing that Andy Murray plays on Monday on CC , we could see Jesuslikeborg make an appearance

I totally agree with you that people are selling Alcaraz a bit short, in the way of recency bias. Also, I think people go with the Spanish name, and expect him to be a clay man. The question is the injury, but, as you say, he's young. He's untested on grass, but he's a HC man. I think it was Miami that he won this year? And Madrid, beating Nadal and Djokovic back-to-back? (But Madrid does play a lot like HC.) Maybe he won't get out of the first round, as I get that Stuff is a tough first round. Still, I will have a hard time picking that round in my draw. He's a talented kid, and he's learning on the job.

When Alcaraz won his first ATP title in Umag his elbow was heavily bandaged, this seems to be a recurring injury, as his coach JCF said before his matches at Hurlingham tournament, which he both lost, it is a exho tournament granted, still he said himself he needed more grass matches., at ;least he is not wearing the elbow brace.
I would have liked him to play a pre grass tournament before Wimbledon, though due to his current elbow problem he couldn't.
I am still out on Alcaraz on grass, not because he is Spanish, it is because of his lack of grass match play.
No doubt he has the skills to be capable on grass, I feel at present he is more suited to HC and clay.
Also the same reason I am out on grass with Ruud, who has not won a grass tour match, though I feel Alcaraz has more game than Ruud has overall.

Time for me to duck out, too. I actually find that since I stopped posting during the slams I handle the bloody stress of them better!

:lulz1:
I tried but my version of tennis frontier's Holy Trinity, Miss @kskate2 , @MargaretMcAleer and @Moxie likes to have their AP posting and they're correct. Kieran and the Sicilian it's not as hostile during the Fedal years IMO.

That's because you still come around and discuss all in PMs, so our point is that you may as well post publicly. :)

Since today is tennis-free, for those who have Tennis Channel, at 11:30am ET today you can watch a rerun of that old chestnut, Nadal d. Federer Wimbledon '08.

That match is like a 19 year Balvenie whiskey, aged to perfection and better with time.
