Maybe in hindsight he should have had surgery on his hand, then going down the other path with more natural remedies.
I don’t know what remedies he tried but is a difficult place to have an injury. I kind of suspect he’s very tentative about it too..

He was due to play some challengers on clay, and was going to use his protected ranking at Wimbledon.Last time I read he was practicing well? no idea why he chose to withdraw at Wimbledon
I still do not know why the reason he withdrew from Wimbledon, though just read, Theim considers playing Salzburg challenger and will defintely play Bastad, Gstaad, Kitzbuhel.

Wow, Thiem is really going down the rabbit hole, between injury and lack of confidence in his body, (or himself.) It's nothing other than shocking. And sad.

Pam Shriver just announced on the Tennis Channel that Rafa will play Wimbledon.
It’s what we suspected but it’s great news. It kind of furthers my suspicion that Rafa uses injuries as a kind of buffer, or comfort blanket, of sorts, to keep some of the pressure away - even though they’re very real. He just gets talking about them so much this year, despite the fact he’s had the best start to a season in his career. I kind of didn’t think he was ever going to skip Wimbledon, underneath it all, even when he was loudly making it known that his life was under threat…

Not quite. JMDP came back several times over the course of 10 years. I would say he has a bit more backbone. Plus he found a different way to play by using the slice BH.
Thiem hasn’t had the same timeline as JMDP. He may yet come back several times, but hasn’t had the time to do that. It hasn’t been 10 years. We’ll see. I certainly hope Thiem comes back, just as I wished JMDP could have returned to his old self.

I hope you're right. I hope he gets the confidence to come back and play no matter the result. That's what I meant about Delpo having more of a backbone.

The other thing is Theim turns 29 this year. Was a late bloomer to become an elite player and the clock is definitely ticking.

I also think his team isn’t that great because they should have been hitting challengers to start and not these tournaments that would definitely be a knock to his confidence losing in the first round.

He'd look quite foolish with his best chance with Fed out of it and Nole still trying to gain his sea-legs! To me if Rafa had avoided Wimbledon, it w/b like the winner of the Kentrucky Derby & Preakness skipping out on the Belmont! I don't think Rafa will succeed, but he had to go or look gutless! :-)2
