Aussies and injuries I tell you,Yeah am gutted to read this. What a wonderful player he was to watch back in particular the 2009 U.S. Open, defeated Federer (final) and thrashed Nadal (sf). It seemed he would have a big future in the game at that point.
The two aussies Darren Cahill and the late Peter McNamara , both fought recurring knee injuries and forced to retire because of those. They are the only other two i can think of.
One of my faves, Patrick Rafter was a relative late bloomer but won the USO 97, 98 but man, did he go through back issues throughout his career.
2001 was a crazy heartbreak year for Patrick Rafter;
At age 28/29 in 2001 he made the SF's of his own home Slam, the AO, lead Agassi 2-1 in sets and eventually lost in 5, of course that same year he was in that titanic loss in the Wimbledon final to Goran Ivanisevic 7-9 in the fifth. He was the losing finalist in the 2 Masters leading up to the USO, Cincinnati and Canada and had the bad luck of the draw to play Sampras in the 4th round of the USO losing to Pete.
Later in the year Australia was a big favorite hosting France in the Davis Cup final, played on grass in Melbourne. They had the #1 player in the world Hewitt, and Patrick Rafter was two time Wimbledon finalist, Rafter won the first singles but he and LLeyton Hewitt lost the Doubles rubber. Davis Cup is soo crazy, Journeyman Nicholas Escude won both his singles rubbers. Patrick's shoulder was bothering him so much , tendinitis, that he couldn't play the 2nd singles match, so Wayne Arthurs played the singles and lost the match to Escude. You know Rafter's shoulder was beyond killing him for him not to play the deciding singles match at home. HIs one Davis Cup singles that weekend was his very last singles match.
Anyways, Rafter ended the year #7 and that was it. Mind you, he had been SF, Finalist, Finalist at Wimbledon for the last 3 years and never played there again. The back/shoulder just wore him down and he did not play in 2002 at all and eventually announced his retirement , though I think Patrick hoped to comeback but the body never recovered.
