Congrats to Thiem. He deserves it after all the struggle over the years. Very tough loss for Zverev but Thiem was not himself in the first two sets either. Great match though.

And for everyone who wondered why I said double faults were such a significant problem in Nalbandian’s career - well, now you know. Lol.
A double-fault is only one failing. Nalbandian had many more. And Sasha didn't just lose this on DFs.

I wouldn’t doubt if this screws with his head for a long, long time.

Not so sure about that. It would have screwed with Thiem’s head far more. Zverev is much younger and he will know he did the same thing to Busta in the semi that Thiem did to him in the final.

You wouldn’t have a clue what those failings were. But I never said Nalbandian’s only problem was double faults. Nor did I say that about Zverev. I just said that it can be a very significant factor in costing someone a match.

I still disagree. He's been trying to get even into a final. He blew a lot of chances, but, for the first time, he put himself into the place to have them. If he's a champion, he'll take good things away from this, too.

Thiem might be more consistent but how can you say he is “much better” than Zverev?

Zverev has major firepower and athleticism to go with his height.

I think they are both pretty even. If Thiem can find a way to get more consistent on his serve, then I think that could make the difference between them.

Congratulations to Dominic Thiem for winning the 2020 US Open and his 1st ever Slam title of his career! It was not pretty but he was able to come back from 2-0 down. Enjoy your well earned title and rest, Thiem! Btw, he might be mentally fried for Roland Garros though...

If nothing else, this was a huge leap forward for Zverev. Prior to this year, he had only made it to the QFs twice at a major — both times at RG. Then the SF this year in the AO. To lose a final in a fifth set tiebreak takes it to a new level.

Sorry for Zverev's tears, but I think it shows how much he wanted it. He'll get his, for sure.

I never thought Thiem’s first slam would be the US Open. I always thought it would be the Australian Open or at Roland Garros. Well we will see. Hopefully, he takes a nice rest and comes to make Paris interesting.

thiem should have beaten djokovic at AO this year as well he was owning him most of the match than choked away the title, by the way hes going to beat djokovic at RG this year if on his side of the draw as well so, thiem now a grand slam champion and noting can stop him now maybe only Nadal. thiem also owns zverev 8-2

Thiem just barely beat Zverev in the 5th set in a tiebreak after Zverev served for the match. Only a total moron would say Thiem is “much better.” That makes no sense.
