Well that is just huge. Venus not the returner she once was and Gauff served phenomenal. But she fought when Venus got back into it. And she rarely showed signs of nerves. Venus saved three match points. But Venus let her get back to it and Gauff comes out on top. Just huge. The arrival of a fantastic young new talent. Venus' terrible year continues. Tough draw apparently. Gauff just kept believing she was good enough to hang with and beat Venus.

Sad to see Venus lose early. But this is the way it goes.

Bye Bye Ostapenko lost in straight sets to Hsieh 62 62

Sabalenka out in straight sets to Rybarikova 62 64

What the hell is in the water at Wimbledon this year, both the women and the men have had high seeded players lost today

Vika trying to consolidate the break in the second set.
Hsieh finishes off Ostapenko. Ostapenko's fall down the rankings will now be complete. Will lose semifinal points from here to the first round. Maybe one day she'll look back on all this and see it as a learning experience. Or maybe we'll never see her reach the heights she has again. Every day we find more youngsters that will certainly be competing with through the years. Gauff now. Anisimova. Vondrousova (lost today). Potapova. Yastremska, Kostyuk.

And Zhang looked good early against Garcia. I focused on Venus though and Zhang had the goods to take the first set from Garcia. Tough first rounder for Garcia. And for Zhang. We'll see how it plays out. Garcia having won Nottingham, still not consistent enough to trust in the first week or even the first day of a slam. I think at this point it's safe to say the pressure of the slams gets to her.

Sorribes Tormo having to retire against Wozniacki. A little lucky for Wozniacki. She'd come back from 3-0 and 4-2. But the injury may have helped her. She'll be glad to get a break.

Well Zhang a bit of a revelation out here. I mean. It's Garcia that is faltering. But solid play from Zhang.

And Vika finishes off Cornet. Thrilled for her. Gets Tomljanovic. Winnable match for sure. But with Tomljanovic's serve, she's got a shot.

I know Osaka let go of her coach because she was unhappy. Nothing to do with tennis, we can assume. Who knows if he was abusive with her. But clearly she's having difficulty finding her feet without him. I hope she stops the rot soon, but it's becoming a pattern. She seemed quite emotional in the post match presser. I wonder what's going on in her head right now. Hope she rights the ship. I love her game

Osaka is not a great grass court player,so I was not surprised she lost to her opponent, who recently defeated her in straight sets at Birmingham.I think she is more of a hard court player. In saying that I also feel the pressure got to her, which is understandable, she needs to take the pressure off herself and play more freely.

So I completely randomly saw Gauff qualify for Wimbledon because Eurosport was broadcasting the qualification tournament. And now I saw her beat Venus Williams. Great player, really smooth style, good footwork. Nadalesque composure today against Williams. Fun to watch, nice interview debut afterwards at age 15.

Gauff just announced herself in a big way. I hope she turns out to be the superstar that she seems in the making to be.

Wow. I just saw the Gauff news. Hope she doesn't get overwhelmed by expectations. I was surprised to hear that she was the youngest player to win a Wimbledon match since 1991. I would have thought Hingis was younger but she lost in the 1R in 1995 (at age 14) but went to the 4R in 1996 at 15 (almost 16).

Crazy thing about Gauff is that she just turned 15 a few months ago in March, so she's a young 15.

I can tell you - after I've followed the juniors for a while bacause of Clara Tauson - that we have some really good players underway. One of them Gauff, another 16yo Clara Tauson (AO junior champion) and the last I'll mention is the 16yo Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez (FO champion) both rising stars as Cori Gauff and all are playing super tennis they just have to control their mind, then they are ready to take over.
Live rankings for these players are: Cori Gauff was 299 before Wimbledon won qualification and now second round #214, Clara Tauson is #324 and taking part in W125 Baastad next week, Leylah Fernandez is #370. They are all in the top of the junior rankings Gauff #7 (has not been playng juniors for a while), Tauson #1, Fernandez #3.

I am glad that Venus lost to a young respectful talented black youngster.I dont think she will be badmouthing the sisters to the media.I am sure Serena and Venus dont mind her carrying the torch. She is not half this half that she is a real black youngster..she was very respectful in her interview and thats a plus in my book.

Konta finishes off Bogdan.

Muguruza now down love-30 after having a break point in the last game but failing to convert. Get broken here and that's likely it. She won't be able to be a threat to Barty.

love- 40 now.
