I disagree. His backhand was horrendous for much of the match - that is, until Federer fell apart in the fourth set and Dimitrov got a surge of confidence from it. Federer lost this more than Dimitrov won it.

Dimitrov's dumbstruck look about winning tells you all you need to know. I was not impressed much by Dimitrov because I didn't really see any improvement from what he has demonstrated in the past.

I'm afraid this not a case of Dimitrov being better but of Federer being worse.
I definitely pick Medvedev to make the final.

As expected, Fed was classy in the presser; didn't blame it on injuries and gave credit to Dimi.

Unlike his peers of course, who are gobbling up slams like pac-man.

You will see soon. Zverev will get passed by a few of his peers. One already did.

have to agree that Fed was shanking an incredible amount of balls, at one stage one in every two shots...….he is definitely nowhere near his 2017 level, and hard to see that he'll ever be again.

Agreed, I would like Dimitrov's chances against Nadal if his backhand wasn't so terrible much of the time. But I think Medvedev can make things interesting. And unlike the other young players he actually has some personality and personality traits of adult masculinity.

I don't really see any reason why he'd be mentally toast against Dimitrov, particularly early on. He did appear out of kilter. More likely physical (the commentators pointed out things during the match) but it doesn't really matter... if you're on court, you're good to go. I like the fact he doesn't retire and sees matches out.

I think it was fatigue. Maybe it's humid there tonight, who knows but he was moving in slow motion all night. And the end of the 4th set gave Grigor more confidence as the 5th set was easily the best he played all match. As for why he was mentally toast against Grigor after set 4...Wimbledon. When it rains it pours. If he decides to play the rest of the year there will be more collapses, it is a given.

Yet he still had every chance in the world to win the 4th set.....he never should have allowed the early break and then he had I believe 5 break chances to tie it up at 5-5. It was just an epic meltdown. One of the most painful losses I have seen for him.

Who? Medvedev?

Yeah, he's gone further here. Outside of that, he's only got to the fourth round of a major once in his career. Obviously the flavour of the day... but I'm not writing Zverev off yet. He's only 22... and actually won more than his peers.

Federer played bad, that is true. But Dimitrov had his virtues. The backhand was not that bad -- if it was the number of UFE's would be higher. He kept a decent pace on his shots throughout the whole match. His serve was pretty ok. Even if Federer's approaches were kind of suicidal, he kept passing him with efficiency. A lot of guys would have panicked.

He started slow and payed the price losing the first. He won the second by his merits. He was outplayed on the third, but started the fourth strong, and managed not to be broken -- even if that fourth set is one of the strangest sets I saw Federer play. Then, ok, the fifth was a mere formality.

So, in the end he was able to beat B- Federer in a major quarter final. It is still a feat, specially to a guy who was outside top 50 for the whole year.

Not writing him off either but I don't think he will lead the new wave anymore.

For the record, it's not humid. It's lovely weather, though warm, and so maybe hot on the court.

I'm not writing him off, either, but clearly Zverev is not the crest of the New Wave at the moment. But hey, Dimitrov was once, and look at him today. Only took 10 years. I hope Zverev doesn't follow in his path. Frankly, I don't think he will, but he's got to right the ship. He's getting passed at least in locker room cred by a lot of youngsters.
