IF Murray overdid it at the end of 2016 to take the YE1 the question is whether it was worth it. It is a big scalp but he would have gotten the no1 ranking the next year at some point anyways. Health goes a long way even if you are close to such an achievement.

I reckon he'll think it was worth it. No guarantee it could have happened later. It was a small window of opportunity and who knows how he was feeling physically at the time. Plus, he is no spring chicken... as others have mentioned, retirement at this age isn't particularly unusual.

No regrets is fine. But having a few more shots at Wimbledon? Well it doesn’t matter now.

I guess the entire field is hoping to draw Murray at Wimbledon. Easy entry into the second round.

Apparently Andy Murray is going to become a permanent fixture at Wimbledon, part of the furniture so to speak as apparently his legacy is going to be set in stone there.

I agree it would have to have been worth it. I don't think it was his hip that was his problem at that point. Only the Big 4 have been to #1 since Roger first got there in 2012 BC or whatever. It's a great achievement in the life of a tennis player, esp. in this era. It also got him the YEC and YE#1.

I don't think anything proves that that specific run towards #1 is the thing that screwed up his hip. After the 2017 AO, I believe he dropped out of the next tournaments due to elbow. Hip is about the whole of his athletic life, I think. And the way he's built. Sometimes, in the life of an athlete, it probably has to be the bird in the hand. Likely more often than not.

that's the way Andy. Keep fighting. Jeez he looks the goods when ever he moves forward, not bothered with his hip injury. Can he sustain that type of play for two and half more sets and gets out of this ?

Pretty improbable IMO. RBA is pretty solid. It's a big ask.

Gutsy Murray. I don't even care if it's too little too late.

Murray’s walk looks horrendous. I mean he had a habit of limping but this... anyways this match is great fun.
