There is a lot that can happen. Nadal has to remain healthy, and it looks like Djokovic is making a resurgence. Nadal still has to win three more to match Roger and add a 4th to surpass Roger. I can’t see Nadal’s body lasting for another two years because he goes through cycles with his health where he is good for a couple years and then it breaks down. Djokovic is on the mend it seems, so there are a lot of what ifs.

The field is garbage, Ralphy will win a couple more RG's at least. Bottom line is I won't relax until that peasant is gone from the sport with less majors than Roger.

Mary Jo Fernandez just said that she thought Roger lost confidence after not closing out in the 3rd. FH went off, and then KA kept getting better. That's sort of what people here have said, (though some not as kindly) but MJ knows Roger well.

So a nice way of saying he choked. I know...people hate to use that word. Either he suddenly forgot how to play tennis or he choked yesterday, there is no in between.

@DarthFed Definitely a nice version of choke. Mary Jo will never say anything mean against Roger because her husband manages him.

Realistically, he got two more than I estimated. I thought he was done in 2012. I don't know why you think he has a shot at USO. People worship him in NYC. Media all over him 24/7 in a chaotic slam. He's too big to be a great tennis player at this point.

Beatles folded not because they weren't good anymore. They disbanded because the fans didn't let them make good music.
Yeah last time was 6-1 6-1 and now he folds like a cheap suit to this creampuff. I don't care if he's 56, he shouldn't lose this early in the tourney to a guy with only a serve.

I think he's done too unless he wins one of the next two majors. We will see if he still has any ambition or if he is going to spread the ass cheeks for Rafa to derail his career

Exactly, not to mention the fact a commentator is never going to say a top player choked. Sometimes a spade is really a spade. If yesterday wasn't choking then there is no such thing in sports.

He has no prayer to win USO. You don't go from 0 to 100 quickly. He needs to gear up in the offseason to try for AO and/or Wimbledon next year otherwise his career is doomed to being 2nd rate. Peasant boy won't stop coming.

Federer looked like a nearly 37yr old as the match went on...fh ufe's, groundstrokes hit long. kev improved his level also and in the end was cracking serves/groundstrokes and was ahead in most rallies set 3/4/5..

sodding big kev kept to his new recent mental approach and stayed in each point as it happened..and then he won.

It's tough, really really tough to take something positive from this defeat. I think if Nadal wasn't in it then the severity of the loss wouldn't be as much even though it would've still hurt because he was the firm favourite to win and maybe blew his last opportunity to win a slam. Then blowing a 2 sets to love lead to Kandy is too unthinkable. Ok I can understand if it's Cilic or some new big hitter he's never played but this is a guy who he's played before and it's not like Kandy can put on some performance like Tsonga did in 2011. Kandy was insanely lucky, he hit so many lines, ridiculous how he got out so many 0-30 games and BPs. Just unthinkable really.

It's just shocking, overwhelming to put this loss into perspective. The consequences are potentially legacy defining. Besides the disastrous consequences, it feels like Fed was struck by a tsunami. I just don't know how he'll get up from this, he has to but I wonder if he'll ever be clutch again. In some ways this feels worse than Wim 16 SF exit even because Fed may have hit his ceiling ie he just cannot play any better because the age is really showing. He may have squeezed out his last slams.

I also wish Fed just came out and said that he was injured, just say something to put the doubt in his future opponents and although it would take the sheen of Kandy's win but who cares? Sure it's not fair but look at the guy who is chasing you, he's like the exact opposite of fair so this notion that Fed must play fair and be classy all the time while the other literally spits on the game is totally absurd.

Fed has to do SOMETHING to revive his career because at this rate, he could be completely out of slam contention if he doesn't get a massive boost from somewhere. I don't think even the most optimistic Fed fan thought he could win AO 17 so it's not impossible but Fed has to get out of this negative, cowardly trying to save the match mode into putting his complete soul and mind into Cincy and USO even if he doesn't win them.

Stop taking so much pressure FFS, the favourite tag is only a tag nothing more. Play like you're the underdog and trying your best to win every single match like your life depends on it and see how his career can turn on it's head. It's all in the mind.

All things being equal, this could be the worst loss of Fed's career if faker doesn't stop dull in the SF.

I think if Nadal equals or break Fed's slam record, it is the worst thing to have happened in any sport. I think it will top the Armstrong scandal in terms of killing the sport.

Not giving excuses, but we need to remember that two bad things happened in the game that Fed lost in the 5th set. In one point, Fed came forward for an easy shot and an idiot from the crowd yelled out and Fed hit it out. In another point, when Fed was getting ready to serve, a stupid air-plane was right above him and it disturbed him. As a result, he coughed up a double break which actually led to the break point. It is not a lame excuse, considering that it was the only double fault by Fed in the entire match.

I don't know why but I think Fed will win USO. I think he'll peak for Cincy USO because he'll be highly motivated and desperate to win there after this shock.

Logically faker and dull would be the favourites but I think Fed will end up winning. All is not lost yet imo.

Let me throw in a reason. If it goes to fifth set, in USO one does not go on and on like in other slams. TB is played at 6-6. Even though Fed sucks in five setters, Fed is very good in TBs. I will take Fed against anyone in a TB.

However, if the match goes to 5th set it already means Fed is not playing well. Also, with the resurrection of Novak and the in-form Rafa, the draw will not be a walk in the park for anyone this year unlike the joke it was last year.

Completely agree. It may be the worst even if Nads doesn't win Wimbledon. He had a cakewalk to a final he would've been a heavy favorite in. If his career ends up being weak it's really this event and USO 2017 that made it so.

I've always said if Roger was stronger mentally during matches he'd be damn close to perfect. It'd have almost been boring in a way. I had hoped he'd put these crazy lapses/chokes behind him for good. But he went all Novotna on us yesterday at possibly the worst moment.

This is up there with 2008. I am pretty sure he was pissed off that he was playing on Court 1. It's a bit mysterious really because KA wouldn't have intimidated him. He dealt with Kyrgios' serve just fine. The only explanation is 37. The sad thing about these losses is that he loses big matches to players who themselves are chokers. Tsonga? Berdych? Raonic? Now add KA to that list. What are the odds that KA will win the title?

The odds KA wins this title are 0.0. He will be through after tomorrow against a guy who won't choke.

And yes 2008 was also dismal. It definitely led to this but Roger has had many chances to seal his status. Now he may end up just being a Chrissy Evert except not as hot or as much of a whore :)
