In either late 90s or 2000/2001 there was a lot of genuine concern about how the grass combined with the ever more powerful racquets was making lush grass court tennis a boring servathon. Sampras winning 7 titles and Ivanisevic's numerous runs made the issue visible even in MSM. That was the original impetus for meddling with the sacred ground.

I think the organizers didn't see the extreme top spin rackets and the game of attrition coming. Once they started engineering the surface they opened a Pandora's box. What they don't seem to realize is that it can't be called a 'natural surface' with a straight face anymore. It's some botox facelift and it shows.
They lost my respect back in 2002 when they switched it. Most people had Wimbledon as their favorite slam in large part due to how different it was. Then the tourney director decided he likes long rallies and changed history as we know it resulting in the slop we see now.

That is true. Personally I am only interested in watching Federer perform on court. I don't care whether Federer divorces his wife or not, whether he buys two airplanes and an island or not. I am just interested in what he does on court. That is what sport is all about. People pay to watch the athletes perform, and the athletes make millions from it, but that shouldn't stop me from enjoying the sport.
Bingo. I wouldn't care if he sells drugs if he plays like RF on court.

He probably just buys them.

OK OK, I'm kidding. Ease up. We all know Rafa is the juicer.

True. Let's face it guys, Roger and Rafa are monster draws. I know if I was paying £500+ for debenture seats to watch play on CC and they told me that Rafa or Roger was on No1 I would have a fit
First time in my ear, that expression. U like to use it at wimby only? Or would you also use it at USO among Americans?

You don't have the expression, to "have a fit?" I.e., to raise hell in anger over a perceived injustice.

lol, didn't say I blame him considering Mirka and his age, but maybe he'd have won more with no rugrats :D
OMG, you really do go too far. You've made millions of excuses for why Roger doesn't have more Majors, even though he has the most of any man. It's petulant and childish. And you aren't the only one to reach too far on the last pages of this thread...do we really have to talk about who does and doesn't have children? But now you're begrudging Roger his, (and likely kidding, I see that emoticon.) Yet, by the same token, kind of resenting them, and making excuses out of them. Unbelievable. And seriously not just you.

You answered my ? indirectly, as I know you're located near USO, so thanks.
Well, the expression in question can have different meanings.
The formal meaning that I know: "have a spasm, like e.g. an epileptic spasm due to neurological condition in the brain". Such meaning would be clearly inappropriate in Berg's post. Hence my question to him.
So I looked up & found an informal meaning (the same you've cited) but I still didn't know how widely it's been used. Now I do know, this colloquial term is worldwide, also confirmed by my local colleagues who laughed at me saying I'm too serious.

After the 4th round is over (well, almost over), here are the latest odds. As there are only 9 players alive, I am giving odds for everyone.

1. Federer 5/6 (55%)
2. Djokovic 9/2 (18%)
3. Rafa 11/2 (15%)
4. JMDP 12 (8%)
5. Raonic 16 (6%)
6. Anderson 40 (2.5%)
7. Isner 50 (2%)
8. Nishikori 66 (1.5%)
9. Simon 300 (0.33%)

The number of contenders has decreased to 3 after dismal performance by JMDP today and also due to the fact that to win it, he would have to perhaps beat all members of Big Three and that too one after other in succession.

Whether or not people agree with the specific values, I think everyone will agree with the pecking order.

I actually think that if he hadn't had those kids, bearing in mind Mirka is older than him, it would probably have had a very negative impact on his career. Happy home, happy life. It's important to remember Roger did not win a single title before Mirka. In my humble opinion all he's done in his family life has probably helped him add to his title haul. Just think back to the barren years, at least he could go home and spend time with his family. Probably gave him the perspective he needed to end up having the best short term memory of any major athlete I can remember

I think there's something else everyone is missing. He's got children. Couldn't he teach his children how to play then in the future if they're interested they could become pros? The fact he's got a family might seem a burden to some people now but his children could actually be future stars & take over from him later. It could actually be a good thing for his fans & tennis but the decisions are all up to both him & his children when they get to the right age to make them. Who knows what the future holds?

No, she's just taken it to its next logical step: he could just retire already and raise his future champions. :D

I'm not begrudging Roger his children. Obviously he and Mirka are happy and wanted kids otherwise they wouldn't have had them and time was ticking for her biologically.

But what i said is very possibly true, though FB makes a good point as well. Usually family obligations are a negative for athletes and to suddenly have 2 and then 4 kids is a big change in priorities.

I simply cannot understand how anyone can call Simon just a pusher. Folks need to use their eyes. The guy has an understanding of how to play tennis that's deep. I'm watching how he's managed to start renting space in Delpo's mind. He's made him lack confidence in the efficacy of his weapons. I've seen him do this type of stuff to Roger as well. It's heartening to watch him victimising someone else to be honest. But to just dismiss this guys work as just pushing? Nah... look again... carefully

DP is choking massively. If he loses this set he will drop the 5th 6-1 or 6-2

Well.. Delpo managed to get through. After watching this match, it's difficult to say how he performs against Rafa. If his wrist is ok (he seemed to play with it a few times) then it's likely his strategy will be somewhat different against Rafa. Can't really blame the guy, Simon makes you doubt yourself. But if he plays like that? Rafa will straight set him comfortably

It is splitting hairs but I do think the guy is definitely a pusher. He's a counterpuncher and he's crafty, solid returner etc. but the cornerstone of his game is pushing. It drove Roger nuts at a time when he was a UE machine (2008).
