See, while Delpo won that amazing point, I don't mind that because he making Delpo run and hit his backhand.
that poor kid just killed a bug on national tv
As Toni is trying to say now to Pam Shriver, Rafa has to stop waiting for the ball. The match got better towards the end of the set. Delpo's backhand has been consistent and steady so far...
As for Nadal, will he able to break down Delpo's backhand AND can he return better?
More like that.
I think he may be getting a new attitude now. Hope you'll join the live chat. The notion thrown around by some worried Fed fans that this was a gimme for Nadal was always going to be bullshit anyway, and it wasn't hard to see why. I've been harping all tournament that Nadal has been playing virtually without a DTL forehand, and it's all the more evident in this match. I don't think he's playing badly, but he's legit hitting his forehand in one direction and one direction only.
Moreover, the notion that DP's backhand was going to break down is baffling to me, because it never does. He's had to adjust how he hits it after the injury, but his issues since have never been unforced errors off that side, but rather having to slice it (which he isn't tonight) or not being able to penetrate the way he used to. With Nadal directing the ball exclusively to that wing, it's actually helping DP because he can just anticipate, sit on his backhand, and make sure he doesn't do much but hit with length.
Set was close and boiled down to a lucky let chord, and Nadal actually dictated a lot of rallies, but he just won't win them without changing direction. Meanwhile, DP's forehand is firing and he's serving extremely well.
