So thrilled for Rafa. He was committed to winning this RG, and it showed. I'm away, but looking forward to catching up with some of the chat. Nadal is back to some of his best tennis. ¡Vamos!
Very similar to 2008 and 2010..maybe thats a good Omen for Wimbledon ::sw1::

In this final I was amazed to see how much of a weapon Rafa's serve was; i.e. got some cheap points with his placements and even generated genuine major firepower at times.

I suspect Moya contributed more than somewhat to this tweaking of Rafa's serve.

This is very true..Rafa served a few in the 120 mph range..i wonder if Moya will get Rafa to beef up the serve for Wimbledon

There was much talk from the commentators about the faster serve, (though the placement choices are probably more important to the difference in his game) and the overall faster shot speed. It was mentioned that he's using a new, heavier racquet, though I haven't heard much about that. Sacrificing a little feel for more power, apparently.

He better or he'll be gone in the 1st week again! The tour's helping him out a bit with the latest start ever for Wimbledon; actually waiting until July when the tourney could be over by the 4th in past generations! They might as well throw a Masters event in there! Borg won Wimbledon and defended his titles within days of winning his FO's, now Rafa will have all kinds of time to recuperate! :nono:

Nadal won RG and later Wimbledon (2008 and 2010) when both tournaments were closer

Rafa said the extra week doesnt really help him or makes a difference because he previously made five Wimbledon finals under the original two week intervals between the the final day of the French Open and the start of the Wimbledon championship.

Yawn. Just like I said 5 weeks ago - just give Nadal the trophy and everybody move on. Thank God the clay season is over and we can move back to tournaments EVERYBODY wants to play - and not just Nadal...

His problem is - he hasn't been able to make it out of the 4th round in 6 years. It's the surface NOT the amount of time he'll have between tournaments - especially since nobody could be bothered to make him WORK for the RG title. Sure, he's been in 5 Wimbledon finals - but none since 2011 and he's 2-3. King of Clay but not GOAT...

Personally, I think it can't hurt and can only help. He's not as young as he used to be, and the clay season has been quite the slog. Not sure where he's taking his warm up tournament this year, but I think a good rest is in order before grass.

Credit to Moya with regards to Nadal's serve, because Rafa was really running out of ideas at this point last year with the serve. He was doing that weird thing where he stood wide to serve. It was so aggravating to watch.

I recall you arguing that Nadal of 2010 was inferior to Nadal of 05-07 because he was 'slower' when his best years have been 2008, 2010 and 2013. Now you are arguing that since 2012, his knees are 'shot'. This year, Nadal has looked as good as ever, perhaps a bit below 2010 and 2013. Back in 2008, did Nadal make AO finals? he was decimated by Tsonga. His FO win this year was as dominant or more dominant than in 2008. This year, i have seen 0 evidence of bad knees or physical issues.

When it comes to Wimbledon, i don't think it has anything to do with his knees... I think Nadal has always struggled on grass. With the exception of 2008, he had to get past 5 set matches to get to finals, he has always been vulnerable in early rounds. The problem is not his knees, it's that Rafa enters grass court season after dominating on clay and getting too accustomed to clay, then in early rounds of Wimbledon, he is trying to adjust to grass when grass isn't worn out yet. To compound his problems, he runs into guys that do nothing outside of grass but on grass, are very dangerous. If he gets past early rounds, he is a different player and harder to beat... Given he hasn't done well in previous years, he has less confidence too so this makes him even more vulnerable in early rounds.

Hi Mike and @GameSetAndMath

Just thought you'd find this interesting: http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/ten...ees-pose-more-problems-on-grass-a3562656.html

If you're not in the mood to read the article, here's a quote from someone who knows Rafael Nadal better than anyone... Rafael Nadal himself:

“It’s true that after 2012 what happened with my knees has made it tougher for me to compete on grass.”

He added: “I love grass. It’s a surface I really enjoy playing on. I missed playing Wimbledon again [last year], so I hope my knees will hold up well and that I can have the preparation that I really need."

Yeah, I rest my case.
