maybe a nice opportunity for Pouille to reach semis ??? Birdie should be tired after this marathon ??
Maybe, Berdy and Cilic are very inconsistent players though this last one had the opportunity to win one USO. Tomorrow Federer is going to have the first 'serious' opponent because until now he has not played to anyone

Doubles on right now: Bryans v. Stepanek/Zimonjic. Funny trivia: Stepanek is the youngest guy on court at 37. (Bryans 38, Zimonjic 40.)

I´ve just seen the serve stats from Cilic (just for the tournament, not the year). The numbers are worrying to say the least.

By the way, from all the stats the Wimbledon site provides, I guess only in one category Djokovic was featuring in the top 20...

This will likely be Federer's toughest test this tournament so far, as it should be.
Quarter Finals have been his doom in the past where he lost in 2010, 2011, and 2013
If he makes it past Cilic, he will play in his 11th career Wimbledon semifinal.
He has been nigh invincible in all 10 semis reached so far, dropping only 1 set Total - to Novak Djokovic back in 2012.
No other player has been as prolific and successful in the semis of any major, not even Rafa at Roland Garros (9-0, dropped 3 sets total).

Roger has been steadily improving each match. His movement and return looked much better against Johnson.
Ground game has still been a bit shaky here and there with his overall lack of match play this year, but it is better than Stuttgart and Halle.
Marin Cilic should be a great test of his return game.
Cilic will be playing Centre Court for the first time this tournament (3 times court 12, once on 2).
It plays slower than any other court so one cannot blindly apply stats from the outer courts to it.
Cilic basically had a practice session against the samurai made of glass, so he will be rested, but will he have his best form?

I'm picking Pouille to upset Berdych tomorrow. Pouille seems very fit and prepared. Berdych escaped against Vesely.
Raonic vs. Querrey should be interesting. Querrey leads their H2H 2-1, with a win at Wimbledon.
Tsonga vs. Murray? Depends on Tsonga to me. Murray has had a steady very good level. Lendl seems to settle him.
But Tsonga is capable of playing beyond that when he is really on. I think Murray, but it would not shock me to see Stronga upset.

We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Respectfully,

Very nice and balanced analysis as always, Masterclass.

I got the memo about the courts and stats. Anyway Cilic is leading the field in some (that is, he is beating all the other guys who play on the outside courts too), and one way or another the stats are impressive. The wining on first serve was extremely high, and I really hope that gauging the speed of the court it falls back to earth. In other times I would think "I hope Cilic plays out of his mind and good old Federer gets in GOAT mode and still wins", but I am very far from this mindset.

Hope Federer can keep his slices very low as he did in the fourth round. That could trouble the big guy.

Thanks and spot on @mrzz . How are things in Argentina? I think Del Potro is playing the next tie in Davis Cup to qualify for the Olympics.
He's my dark horse for a gold in Rio and the US Open if that backhand continues to get stronger.

Great post !

Pouille injured himself against Tomic and said after the match that his win was more due to Tomic's poor strategy choices than him playing better. He was struggling moving and I'm not convinced that he will be 100% today. Berdych will be a big test for him, Pouille is 3w for 5l against Top10 players.

Nice post mc... Roger is improving steadily but had a pretty easy draw so far.... Cilic is a step up. Lots of question marks over Roger and where he is at right now... hopefully he'll prevail.

You're not the only one picking Pouille - a few people are predicting an upset. I'm still leaning toward Berdych but will be rooting for Pouille.

I think Murray handles Tsonga relatively easily - 4 sets at most. Murray is Kryptonite for JWT. Raonic ends Sam's journey here.

Calling Time Violations on match points or similar big points is totally against the spirit of things. Glad Nick held it together but somebody needs to lay down the law against this nonsense.

Likewise, disappointed Zverev didn't beat Berdych but he's had a good run and is flying up the rankings.

Totally agree about those time violations. It's when they do it that makes it sketchy. Always on a big point where it can affect the match. Get a shot clock already.

Fed had a couple early chances. For the most part a well played first set. Roger is playing fine but it's clear he can't hold up in backhand exchanges.
