The specific post I responded to Kieran said "And certainly you know - and I know - who would have won if they met at Wimbledon"

As for Wimbledon you are picking just parts of the match. Roger played a clutch 3rd set TB and the last half of the 4th set TB after a dismal first half of it that put him down 5-2 before Rafa blinked. Roger saved 3 BP's but that was a few games after he blew a few BP's of his own. And if he was so clutch in set 5 wouldn't he have won it...usually to be clutch implies you win a specific point/set, etc.

You mention that right after you mention that Roger was "dismal" in the first half of the 4th set tie-break...a tie-break he went on to win with clutch play.

^ The point is he didn't play an incredible tiebreak like he did the whole 3rd set TB. But if your point is he won the 4th with clutch play at the very end of the long tiebreak then yes that is fine. But he did only win 2 of 5 sets right?

I think 2015 will announce itself fairly soon, folks! We'll see some top players shake off the effects of huge Christmas banquets and run around stiffly in the cold.

Or not cold.

I'm most curious about the really young players, like Thiem, and Coric, and of course, Nick. I've given up wondering about Tsonga and Berdy and Daveed. These boys are predictably frail when they need to be tough. Raonic is the mirror of them, but slightly younger. The Skip-A-Generation Crew are more interesting to me now. Who has the gall to rip away the veil and take the prize? That's what it's all about, and it's never a bloodless coup, it's always gory and frightening to see. Who has the nerve for it?

If you examine it closely, the first two numbers of 2008 and 2015 are matching.

Raonic mirror of them? :nono

Raonic is a player who is still developing. How can you classify a 24 y old player in the same bracket with players who have been on the tour for a full decade? That is just silly.
Raonic will progress further. He did not reach his potential yet.

He's a mirror of them in the sense that he'll win as much (or as little) as them, and always be susceptible to coming up short when you stacked your wedge on him...

EDIT: and by the way, a 24 year old is no greenhorn...

Too early to say he will come up always short. And he JUST turned 24 a few days ago.

These days, players do not peak until 26-27.
So let's talk in...2017.
Until then, I will still consider Milos or anyone else at his age work in progress.

Really? Nadal and Federer broke through young, Nole was young as well, and most great players before them. Maybe ordinary players peak later and wait for everybody else to decompose in their seats before making a move.

I'm exaggerating, but only slightly. I'd love to know what anybody's expectations of Milos are. Mine are that we'll see more of the same, give or take, but nothing stellar...

OCO, you know better! It was a lot easier for Roger and Rafa to excel so early on because there was a "changing of the guard!" Sampras had just left in '02, Agassi was having a resurgence in his twilight years, while the rest of the top echelon were beating each other like Hewitt and Safin! It was sorta like that period when Graf, Sabatini, and Navratilova were fading or had left, while the new stars were still green like Davenporte and The Williams sisters! Hingis took advantage of that period and won her 5 majors in singles and 7 in doubles with varying partners! The only difference is that Federer and Nadal were able to grow and actually excel past all expectations! If not for Djokovic, their legend would be even greater! :dodgy:

Rafa excelled when Roger WAS the guard. I'm beginning to suspect this later-peak theory maybe flawed. Physically these guys are stacked. Mentally?

Did you ever expected Wawrinka and Cilic to win slams?? I am sure you have not. When Wawtinka was 23, his best result to that moment was a final in Rome And that was it.
Cilic had a run at the AO SF when he was 21 and he after that did not do much.
So why in such a hurry to write off other players who are still young and have similar accomplishments like these two when were at that age.

I never said about Milos that he will come anywhere close to Nadal's portfolio.

I'm not thinking that either Stan or Marin are great players, either. Both had great runs, at the right time. They did well, but I think Milos is even more limited than them boys. What are your own expectations of him, career-wise? And for 2015?

I delayed my response to you here, because I wanted to see the first few matches he plays this season first before making an assessment short term.
Now here it is:
This year I am expecting 'Milos to have more solid results than last year, especially in the 2 HC slams and I am expecting a top 6 finish by the end of this year.
By the end of his career, he will be at one point in the top 3, win minimum a slam and a few masters.

Brave words, my friend, we shall see. He still has to breakthrough against a top player (I know he beat Federer once, I think) and today's result hasn't put my mind at rest, regarding him. Fact is, old man Federer has defied time once again by dispatching two youngsters to take the title...
