Judging from the last three weeks, Fed should have a decent shot. But I guess i'll have to accept that, going fro from the last three years, he'll probably take a set and then watch Nole hoist the trophy.

Seems like the right script for the occasion. Probably the second set again -- just enough to give the Fedfans a little window of hope, only to be slammed shut in the third and fourth sets by Novak.

Nailed it! ;)

Congratulations to Novak, fully deserved. :clap

What a resilient man, even a fall and bruises could not shake him up completely.

The script played out as described by JSB and tented and dreaded by others like me.

1. Fed came out in a really crazy manner and is not settled at all in the first set.
He needed the first set badly, but was very shaky and highly unsettled. This was weirder than the first set in Wimbledon.

2. After the first set, Fed's serve picked up. However, his forehand did not click throughout the match. He missed so many sitting duck forehand shots. He had over 30 forehand errors alone.
If he needs to have any chance of winning, both serve and forehand have to click.

3. What a terrible breakpoint conversion ratio. It was not this bad for quite a while. 4 of 23 is ridiculous.

4. The only thing that worked was SABR. As per my count Fed won 6 of 10 SABR points (including two induced double faults) and also caused the injury to Novak in the first set.

Now, that Rafa is fading away, it looks like Novak got Fed's number. :cover

Good summary. In general Roger came out nervous and played a bad first set. His game picked up the rest of the way but he did poorly on the big points. One of those bizarre matches where Roger played great well over 50% of the match but had little to show for it because he played bad whenever he was in a position to take the lead/tie the match up, etc.

Tough conditions for him to win in. A hot, sunny day...this might have turned out differently. Toughest pill to swallow is that if he was hitting and returning like this at Wimbledon he probably would've won, it was always a much tougher ask here and the cooler conditions didn't help.

One of these majors, the draw could easily open up like last years USO again.

Ya, problem is when it opens up, Rog is also not there. If he had skipped Montreal last year, may be he would have won last year. :snicker

Maybe in best of five matches, but fast hard courts are still Fed's domain. Had this been played on a warm sunny day, the outcome may have been reversed.

I agree and that's what worries me. Nole is clearly the best player in the world, that's obvious, but I feel that Roger's problem isn't just him in these finals, it has been the moment. Again I don't usually agree or quote JMac but the part he hammered home today about Roger thinking about how few chances he has left and struggling with nerves seemed to play out. Those nerves would still be there even if he was facing a lesser player in the final.

I will be honest that I was nervous about this final, mainly because of 2 things:
1. Nole's record in USO finals
2. Roger looked in scary form.

However, after a few games in the first set, I calmed down, because I realized Roger is a whole lot more nervous than me;)

My main problem through the final was the audience. I could not get over how partisan they were. I know they love Roger everywhere, but this bunch was way over the top.

But, there is an extenuating circumstance here. The audience, including the teetotalers, had nothing better to do than drink for 3 full hours before the match started. :lolz:

They were awful drunk, haha. It was bad when they cheered on faults in the first game then throughout. It wasn't like on big points. It was every tiny thing...

The drunken bum yelling, "FAULT!" as Novak was about to hit his serve was the worst. I heard two NYC undercover cops were sent in to take him down, but they ended up tazing and cuffing a Serbian national. :nono

a lot seemed a bit boozed up.

They must not have had much else to do but drink like fish waiting for the match to begin after a 3 hour rain delay! They were in rare form; actually trying to disrupt and change the momentum of this match! I'm appalled and embarrassed that the feed went around the world featuring these idiots screaming out at inappropriate times thinking it would help Roger! Sad! :cover :nono  :dodgy:
