Rome was an old respectable event, but many people skipped it! The Lipton was the 1st event people considered a 5th major when created back in '85! Everyone played it except Connors and McEnroe who objected to equal prize money of all things! Martina was able to win 3 of the 5 events since they had MXD's! She accomplished it twice; the 2nd time at '87 USO! :clap  :dodgy:

McEnroe and Connors were correct... :popcorn

Rome was the first one I remember being called the fifth major, but now if they were to contemplate a fifth one, they'd head to South America or Asia, and go for broke...

South America would be cool. Anything but China and all that empty money...I mean seats.

I think they could have it in Ireland. At least Novak would be happy. All that rain... :snicker

YEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Fifth slam could be in Dublin, with fifths being quaffed at McDaid's by those unlucky enough to get into the event! :)

Or we could just stay in McDaid's and watch it from there. Who'd want to watch billionaires toppling over in the rain when they could be sat upon the stool in McDaid's?

Murray has finally confirmed that he will play at the WTF in London. However, he will practice on clay next week, the week before WTF.

This is same as what Roger did last year. So, ATP will not consider Andy a bad boy. The drama is over.

Andy is currently 620 points ahead of Roger in race. After this week, it will be clear as to how much Andy need to get at WTF in order to remain as YE #2. Perhaps, Andy will calculate and do the minimum job needed at WTF to maintain #2 and then fake some injury and quit WTF in the middle.

I wish Nadal would win the World Tour Finals just once.

Just so I can watch the Nadal fans do a 180 and start proclaiming how important the title is. :snicker

Yeah, that was a fortunate mishap in my opinion. It has grown on me.

So, London O2 gets three more years. Their previous contract to host WTF was expiring at the
end of this year. Now, they got it again until 2018.

Rafael Nadal attacks: ´It´s unfair that I played ATP Finals always on indoor hard-court´

'It's unfair that I played ATP Finals always on hard-court indoor, but the results got on all the surfaces allows us to have a chance to qualify. Playing indoor doesn't concern me, but we could have played on different surfaces than hard. ATP never gave me a good chance to win the Masters'

That was a long time comment that he made and yes, he is right, they should play every year on different surface, what is the reason that they have to play just in HC indoor?

Why is any tournament on the same surface every year? That logic just falls apart so easily, most tournaments have consistent surfaces, plus everybody is used to playing on indoor hards by the time of the WTF. There is no tournament that annually changes surface. Tradition aside, it's a logical culmination of that time of the year.

There's no other tournament changes country and venue every few years either. ;)

Carol, this was discussed in detail in the previous pages...

Same old Wafa. He is a joke. Tell me, what sense does it make to have a bunch of warm-up tournaments indoors and then go play on outdoor clay a couple weeks later for the main event?

I'd say the ATP and their surface changes have been more than kind to him over the years. If they played on the old grass he'd be sitting on more early exits at Wimbledon and he'd be lucky to win one let alone 2. US Open has noticeably slowed down, Australian Open plays on a surface that takes his spin better, etc. And if Roger was playing on grass actually suited for him I don't think he'd only have 7 titles there. Poor little Whafa has been so hurt by the ATP and their surfaces. One more bad year please...knock the bich out of the sport!!

Roger on grass suited to him. :cover

If Roger played in the nineties, etc. Gimme a break, bro, nobody benefited more from homogenous surfaces than Roger. Unless it's also both Rafa and Novak. There's no clear winner here on that one... :nono

^ We aren't talking about Roger playing on grass in the 90's, we are talking about him playing on the faster grass in his era, where Rafa, Nole, and many others clearly have a better chance against him than on a faster, lower bouncing surface. The surfaces have slowed down, how is that to Roger's advantage?

No, you're talking about "if".

By the way, Wodge the Podge is out. :popcorn

On a slow as hell surface, no surprise. He doesn't really play great on fast surfaces anymore either.

Well he lost in the QF last year so he didn't lose much here. He is defending the finals of YEC though and that might be tough to reach. Murray seems to be in good position to finish #2 now.

Now, Murray is virtually assured of YE #2 with Fed's loss to Isner.
