It's funny that USTA feels that it has to dangle all sorts of carrots in front of the players to get them to play in their tournaments. This US Open Series thing is a 90s-type relic where the ATP was still trying to figure out what the heck it wanted to do. They have found their formula but predictably, the USTA is still stuck in the 90s and trying to make something work when the Series days are clearly numbered.

Actually, USTA is not coughing up the money. Emirates Airlines is coughing up the money. It is kind of a good deal for Emirates as it gets good publicity. They announce it like a million dollars bonus money. But, they don't have to pay it up every year, but they will get publicity every year.

But, if you ask whether this money helps Tennis, I would say definitely not. There are better ways to spend it for promotion of tennis in USA or just tennis anywhere.

Notice even in this market they feel the need to keep that old system! I love those traditional events that have stayed closer to "common sense" like Rome and Monte Carlos! Even though they're Masters' events, the prize money hasn't gotten out of hand and their trophies are quite iconic and humble in comparison to others that are so gaudy in many ways! :cover :nono  :dodgy:

Murray wins the prestigious Us Open Series for the second time. He gets a cool million dollars for that little title and if he wins the USO, he could pull in 4.3 million bucks in all. Not a bad summer bonus.

Murray Clinches Emirates Airline US Open Series Title

It's crazy money, though, isn't it? I mean, what is this US Open Series, other than a bribe? Do fans care? I don't think so. There has to be better ways of distributing the wealth at the top, if they have so much of it that they contrive these indecent rewards. I've long thought that a fraction of all purse money should go into a fund that's distributed among the pioneers of the sport, the old goats and geezers who earned tuppence ha'penny for winning indoor tourneys played on lino, in the fifties...

You are misleading people. Murray does not get a million dollars for winning the USO Series. He gets a million dollars in addition to US Open titlist prize money, if he wins the US Open. If he does not win the US Open, he does not get million dollars extra. He gets some money extra based on the Bonus Prize Money Chart

That was implied in the post and the article linked. I'm sure people are losing sleep over how and what Murray is getting in the US Open Series prize money. :snicker

I am not picking on you. But, the way you stated it looks as though Murray already won a million bucks by winning the USO Series. If people are losing sleep over it, I would not have bothered to correct it, as they would already be knowing in that case. Only because people don't care, I didn't want them to be misled. :)

Not that I cared how much Andy made, but I said to myself, "hmmm, they changed the monetary system?" I always thought to get that extra cash, you actually had to win the USO in "Flushing!" Thanks! :cover :puzzled :nono

talking of money..djokovic has zoomed through the $10m mark in prize money already for 2015.

rafa's 2013season has most with over $14m, Federer was 1st past $10m in his mega 2007 season.

As if they have not faced each other enough, Rafa and Novak are playing in an exhibition match in October somewhere (I think Thailand).
