Federer is once again the top earning tennis player for the fiscal year ending June 1st 2015. Fed made 67 million bucks compared to Novak's 48.2 and Rafa's 32.5; Needless to say these three are the top (tennis playing) dogs in Forbes's list.

Great article about Novak and what he has to deal with

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/14/magazine/why-cant-novak-djokovic-get-some-respect.html?_r=0

In this one, he talks about how he dealt with it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/15/sports/tennis/novak-djokovics-winning-strategy-mind-over-chatter.html?_r=0
The comments under your article were especially illuminative Nehmeth. One that struck me was someone saying they wouldn't like Nole because he's the Ivan Lendl of this generation.
Ivan Lendl was before my tennis-watching time but this doesn't strike me as true. Maybe it's an Eastern Europe vs. Western Europe thing??

Sorry, just saw this. Ivan Lendl and Novak could not be more different. Lendl was the closest thing to an automaton I've seen in any sport. He had no personality on court. I can't remember him smiling unless he was lifting a trophy, and it was somewhere between a crocodile and a wolf. Off the court he was just as boring. Like Rafa, he loved golfing.

He was the most successful eastern European player until Novak. In my opinion there is a markedly different attitude toward the guys from that region. Lumping those two together is like saying oil and water are alike because they're liquids. :nono

Dimitrov hires Delpo's former coach, Franco Davin. I hope Franco can help him enough to win more tournaments or at least to reach more finals, the Tour needs more competition.

Which proves the point that despite our angst with who's on their last leg and who can beat which record....they're gonna be alright....way better than any of us

Davin has coached two players to slam wins, Gaudio and DP. Hopefully he can find the solution to the problem between Grigor's ears.

And make him more aggressive. Mentality is keeping Dimitrov out of the top 10, but he needs a big weapon to win slams.

If is not Dimitrov, others will step up to the plate, slowly. I like Dominic Thiem's future a lot more at this point.

Thiem says: "I prefer playing ATP tournaments and DC competition rather than Olympic Games. The Olympics are very important only if you gain a medal and that's a very difficult achievement"

I agree 100%

I agree as well. Davis Cup is way ahead of the Olympics in my book. While a gold medal is nice, it almost seems like a exhibition event. Heck, maybe it is just an exhibition event. lol Was pretty happy when Murray won the Gold in 2012, but I'll be going spastic if he is able to lead Great Britain to the Davis Cup in November.

I discounted the Olympics as an event from the beginning; allowing the pros to move in and take over! It was nice that Edberg did his thing as a kid, but Graf in '88 was ridiculous! It was such a joke, I had no idea who actually won the men's event in '04; Massu! WHO? :cover :puzzled :nono  :dodgy:

Penny and Ryan Sweeting call it quits.

Didn't Sweeting just retire a couple months ago? So no career and no wife. Time for a fresh new start I guess.

I disagree with this. If Murray leads Great Britain to the Davis Cup title it will be the 4th biggest achievement of his career so far, bigger even than his GS finals (because it's a win) and bigger than his Masters titles. It would be one of his great triumphs. But it won't be as big as his Olympic Gold because the field was stronger. In the Olympics these days, all the top players play in it. Murray had to beat the world no. 2 and world no.1 back to back to win the Olympics. Murray is not having to beat the top players in the Davis Cup. [i know the olympics didn't used to be a big deal, but it really is now. all teh top players play in teh olympics now and they all badly want to win it. olympics gold is celalr y the 5ht biggest prioze in tennis after the grand slams now. it's like the ao - it was devalued for years because the top players didn't play it. but now they do. so nowtrhe ao is just as prestigious as te3h other slams. things change. i think people need to catch upont eolympics imprtnce andprsitge now.]

The Olympics used to be less important because the top players didn't play it. But they do now, and they all badly want to win it. Murray still describes winning Olympic Gold as his proudest moment, even more than the 2 slams. Del Potro said that winning Olympic Bronze meant just as much, if not more, than his US Open win, and that was the bronze! Thiem was not saying the Olympics is not important, he was saying it's only important if you win a medal, which he said was 'very important' and 'a very difficult achievement'. He means it's an all or nothing thing with the Olympics - anything less than a medal and there's no point, whereas with ATP touraments getting to QF, SF etc counts for something. Saying the Olympics is not important now is like saying the AO is not important because the top players didn't used to play it, even though they do now! People need to catch up - the Olympics is big now in tennis. It's the 5th biggest tournament in tennis. (Even though this is not yet reflected in the points it gets, you can bet your bottom dollar that's how the players feel. e.g. if you asked any player if they'd rather win the WTF or be Olympic Champion, they'd say Olympic Champion.)

Maybe tennis fans who didn't grow up with the Olympics devalue it, because it wasn't there, and then when it was, it was initially an exhibition event, which is probably why it still feels to you like an exhibition event. But it's not now. It's a legitimate Olympic tournament, which all the top players play in. I think the generations growing up now will attach more importance to Olympic Gold. It's the older tennis fans who are behind the times, and also behind the players. As I say, we don't see the AO as a lesser slam now because it used to be that the top players didn't play it! (Actually, some people still do see it as a lesser slam - I've heard that view expressed on tennis forums - but again, these people are behind the times and need to catch up!)

Davis Cup is a team event. Winning Gold is a much bigger achievement for one's singles career. I was amused at how worked up Fed's detractors got over the Swiss winning Davis Cup last year, as though it was somehow a strike against Roger that they hadn't won one yet. No event where you are relying on teammates to some degree should factor heavily into a player's resume as a singles player. Ironically last year was one of the few times in the past decade that Roger lost a singles match in Davis Cup. All those years where he mopped up in Davis Cup went for nothing because Stan routinely underperformed. Last year Stan did great and they win, see how that works?

Roger winning Davis Cup to me is very similar to him winning doubles gold. Great achievements for his country but ones that don't really affect his singles resume at all.
