I saw the last thirty minutes of the match and, honestly, Roger ought to have let someone else play. He was not able to hit through the BH or run down shots to the corner. I get the feeling his ego and pride got to him--he ought to have waited to see if he needed to come in for the fourth or fifth rubber. In hindsight, it looks like a poor decision; another day or two of rest might have helped. At any rate, unless he is leaps and bounds ahead of where he physically is now, I would bench him for the fourth or fifth. See if they can win it on doubles (which Roger should NOT play) and then set Stanislas in the fourth slot to be the hero. That is the way to go.

Is this to be Federer's legacy; spoiler? I'll get over it, but he better look out the "trending generation" doesn't start feeling that way! He has to do more than upset a top player; got to win to make it worthwhile! The top of men's tennis is trying to change, but so far he's been able to ensconce himself somehow above the "also-rans!" When will they truly step up? :puzzled :nono :cover :dodgy:

Well said. The problem is that Roger, like the rest of us, knows that if he wasn't out there it'd be the same as forfeiting the match to France. They simply don't have another decent singles player to march out there.

Actually, Roger does not have to do anything. His legacy is more than secure. He can sit at home, play with two sets of twins and nobody can say a thing about it.

I'm speaking in terms of him remaining on the tour! I just don't want to see him end up like Connors or McEnroe; no life outside of tennis! Even Martina began to bother me by '94; early exists, upsets by "no-names," and obviously on her last legs! At least she went out on top in singles; a finalist at Wimbledon! Her second act more impressive than most who played the game!  :dodgy:

Injury had nothing to do with it. Sometimes you just lose. Even Federer is allowed to lose. He's struggled with Monfils on clay before. Clay is Fed's worst surface too. Federer just won 4 matches in a row a week ago, including crushing Murray. I'm supposed to believe he's suddenly injured now?

PS: The above post was sponsored by the anti-Rafa coalition of silly logic.

PPS: No, I wasn't being serious. Because I'm sure someone won't get it.

The guy loves playing. And years like this one, not counting the last week or so, will only inspire him to play more. I am sure he doesn't just want to "exist" in the tour. He will know when to pull the plug.

In all seriousness, this is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation for Roger. If he didn't play, many would have criticized him for "bailing" on his country when they needed him the most. Now that he played, some will criticize him for not giving way to someone else. Personally, seeing who the replacements would have been, give me a 60% Federer any day of the week. His presence alone is important. Plus, I don't think it's fair to simply put it on Federer wanting to avoid criticism. I'm sure he also wanted to play.

Looks like TCC is doing Roger a favor; only replayed Stan's rubber so far! Must have been obligated to telecast bio on Muguruza, then Champions Tennis League at 5 pm, EST! :dodgy:

Clearly Fed did not play well. Injured, pain meds, lack of practice, etc etc, take you pick. But on the other side of the court, Monfils played the match of his life, or at least top 3:

"Afterward, the Frenchman told the press: 'That definitely is one of the top three matches in my life. To be honest, I was very nervous in the beginning. For sure when Jo lost, it's an extra pressure because we need to get back on the road to win the title".” From article on tennis.com

At times Roger was moving Monfils side to side, with ease, and Gael made some great running shots, and Fred missed a few, more than normal. I believe the lack of practice this past week, combined with the sluggish footwork, likely to be back & pain med related, made a huge difference in the scoreline. I did not see Fed wince throughout the match, like he did the TB w/Stan last week.

If Fed wants a DC on his resume, he hits the practice court after the match, hard, service and BH, until he gets it right. If that causes too much pain, put in Marco. 2015 is another story, and he has several weeks to rest and relax. With all the big boys coming out for DC in 2015 to qualify for Olympics, this is the last shot for Fed, unless of course Stan decides to stop failing better and moves on to win better.

1. I don't think France will change the line-up for reverse singles. Neither of their players are overtextended.

2. I too am of the opinion that it may be better for Fed to play in doubles tomorrow and skip
the singles on sunday and hope that Stan can pull it off with a win against La Monf.

The only downside is that if Fed plays in doubles and they lose, for all practical purposes the tie is over.

Benneteau is French Open champion of 2014 in doubles. Gasquet is 2-0 in DC doubles this year.
But, Benneteau and Gasquet have not played together this year (in DC at least). Gasquet played with Tsonga in doubles twice and won both times. Benneteau played doubles once with Llodra once and won it. Those are the three doubles DC wins of France this year. However, I don't think it is a
big deal to be playing with the same person. Benneteau and Gasquet can surely play as well as any other combination that they can think of. More importantly, it would give both Tsonga and Monfils, complete rest for a day (while one or more Swiss singles players will be playing doubles on Saturday).

H2H for reverse singles, assuming the line-up does not change for either country.

Fed vs. Tsonga (all in favor of Fed)

Overall: 11-5
Clay: 2-1
Indoor Clay: 0-0

Stan vs. Monfils

Overall: 2-2
Clay: 0-0
Indoor Clay: 0-0

I have a question to the moderators:

Why is this thread not among the "Important" ones?

Davis Cup hasn't been "important" in years IMO; esp. here in the States since we can barely field a team! It's not like the old days when we had an A, B, & C team depending on the level of competition, surface, and who actually committed to an appearance! :nono  :dodgy:

Rafa is an highly respected doubles player..help me out Kirean and Tented:clap

Well I don't want to battle stubborn AP either...so just point me to the fella's doubles record and I will decide for myself...

Understood Sir Darth.. mr tented can clarify this..

It's certainly respectable, considering it has never been a specialty -- nor has it been for any of the top players these days.

He's 3-0 in Masters finals:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Nadal_career_statistics#Doubles:_3_.283.E2.80.930.29

8-4 in doubles finals in general:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Nadal_career_statistics#Doubles:_12_.288.E2.80.934.29

Interestingly, he and Roger both have 8 doubles titles.

I think no matter what, if France win the doubles then it's over - if yesterday is the best that Federer can offer in singles. I wonder what order the reverse singles are, Stan's match first, or Federer...

So Stan is the strong element of Switzerland and Youngderer the weak element ?? Stan played great I have to congrat him even if Tsonga missed his match but Mr Vavrinec ??? What did it happen to him ? He said in presser than he wasn't injured but I have some problems to buy this version, hope he can stay in the boxw now and let his team do the job, it's clear that he's not ready to play especially on clay. I expect Stan to play the double this afternoon, he'll try to get the 2nd point

Federer's is scheduled first.
