Well, the result wasn't ever in question and it goes to show Serena can play a poor tournament but always brings her best against Sharapova, who must feel a bit like Andy Roddick (against Federer) at this stage. Tough but that's life.

So now she's defeated her on RED clay. What's going to be the new "BUT," they haven't played on quicksand?

But, I liked how Maria came out fighting in that second set, although you sensed if Serena got the break back, Maria wilt. Kind felt bad for Maria during the award ceremony. You can see the frustration on face.

Probably forgot who won and had that song ready in case Sharapova miraculously won.

Serena in straight sets.. She will always beat Sharapova because as I said it numerous times before, Pova has a plan A.. hit the ball hard.. if plan A is not working .. plan B is to hit the ball harder and go for broke.. also Pova is not good at creating her on angles with is just like putting herself into Serena's firing range powerful strokes..Serena does all the things that I just mention better.. Just a bad matchup for Pova overall..

Pretty much summed up the match and most of their encounters.

OK Serena, use some of that prize money and get some Spanish lessons.

What a terrible first set from Masha - She lost the match right there - I feel so sorry for her - She should take help from a psychologist to get over her fear from Serena - Anyways - I'm still very proud of Masha and I'm sure the 2 will meet again soon - Good luck in Rome Masha!!

Congratulations Serena! - You're the GOAT!

Congrats to Serena. I don't know if she is the GOAT, but she is definitely the best of her generation :)

Congrads to Serena for defending her title in Madrid.

Maria didn't do too bad herself, moving up to the runner-up position and narrowing the gap between her and Serena in the rankings.

I sure wished for a better final but never the less, well done Ladies.

After having seen this match I have pretty much given up all hope that Maria will ever beat Serena again, doesn't matter if it's red clay, blue clay, green clay, grass, slow hardcourts or quick hardcourts. That horrible first set from her perspective especially made it clear that Serena is too big a mental obstacle to overcome for Maria.

The gap is far wider than the rankings reflect.

Wow who would have thought Serena would grow her game this late in her career for clay. She had won over half her clay titles in the past 2 years. I would love to see her add another French to her mantle, but work still must be done. I like the subtle changes Serena is throwing in with her serve. The pace changes and the kickers are nice.

I believe that she is that tough......just not against Serena. I have watched many matches where she appears to be down and out but she manages to overcome defeat. She can consistently do that against almost anyone except Serena and Vika. The same argument can be made for Roger and Nadal. Roger in his prime could beat almost anyone on any given day.....except for Nadal. Should we believe the hype for Roger?
