Sharapova face at the end is one of the best moments of following tennis , priceless :D

I am telling you, She beat herself !! You could see in her face through the WHOLE match that she doesnt believe in herself! She wanted to cry through the whole match. Unbelievable stuff after all her wins lately.
I guess that she knew that Angie has her number and can beat her !

I like Ang. She often gets pushed around by the big hitters.

Her real issue was mental breaks at finish of matches. She gets soft when she needs to kill the match.
Kerbie lost many titles because of that. She got to the final and lost the match.

I can agree w/ that. I've seen her lose from winning positions a few times. Remember in 2011 when she was playing Lisicki here in the QF's? She had control of that match and lost it. Sabine went on to lose in the SF to Maria that year.
Actually the match between Kerber and Lisicki was in 2012 and Kerber won in the end. I think she had match points in the second set, then lost it in a tie-break but came back from 3:5 in the third. Kerber lost the SF to Radwanska that year. Two weeks earlier she lost the Eastbourne final to Paszek after having five match points.

I think in 2011 Kerber lost to Laura Robson in the 1st Round, fell out of the Top 100 and considered retiring. But then she changed her training setting and had her breakthrough reaching the SF of the US Open. Lisicki beat Bartoli who before beat Serena in the QF 2011.

Angie also lost to Kanepi last year in Wimby after having match points, the list of her chokes is very long BUT!...
THIS YEAR she changed ! I felt it before today! She worked on that mental weakness.
She won today against the most determined player on tour.
No one can call her loser anymore!

Something very wrong with Serena. She consulted a doctor before playing doubles with Venus, couldn't see the ball properly while warming up, played anyway, hit four double faults in a row when serving and they retired 0-3 down.

:(:( It sounds like blood pressure problem but I am not a doctor. Just a patient
Her blood pressure is too high because of all the stress. She just needs to relax and forget about tennis for few days.
Her brain is boiling because of the stressful thoughts, I know the feeling. It effects the vision amongst other things. She will be ok after few days.

That was the most ridiculous thing I can remember; and I've been around the game since '71! If they struggled at their best early on in the tourney, how did they think they could survive with her incapacitated? Idiots! :nono That was a total waste of time! My guess is that they didn't want to default since it would look like sour grapes after both Williams' were eliminated in singles! You think of that sort of thing since it has happened in the past! The entitlement in so absurd! :nono :puzzled

Very odd from Serena indeed. I'm very curious. I'm disappointed I missed the Sharapova match. Really surprised by that. But, good for Kerber. I've always liked her. Though my fandom has wavered as she's struggled and just been spinning her wheels for a while. Really sad to see Safarova blew out Makarova. I was hoping she'd make her first semi finally. Here's to a Kvitova v Safarova semi and a Lisicki v Kerber semi.

I guess I have to admit that I definitely didn't think Lisicki would make it this far. I figured she'd been struggling too much. But I'm starting to believe. In fact, I'm starting to believe that despite losing sets, she's playing like she knows she can go into that final this year and win it. But of course, now that I've jumped on the bandwagon, Halep will amaze me again and simply be a wall against Lisicki and make me angry and take her out. Still don't like Halep and with the crowd that's left, a bunch of head cases, I'm worried she's going to win this thing. That would really suck.

I actually think Kerber's record in close matches is rather good, but more because she gets into close matches with players she should defeat easily. But it's true that she lost sometimes after having match points. I remember the matches against Paszek in Eastbourne and Azarenka at the YEC in 2012 and Kanepi in Wimbledon and Suarez-Navarro at the US Open 2013.

In general I feel her problem is more that she is prone to throw in a rather bad performance in a big match even if her form seemed good before and she's playing against someone lower ranked. Additionally if she meets someone higher ranked in a semi or final usually the limitations of her counter punching game or problems to generate pace on her own are exposed and she gets soundly beaten.

Sorry to hear about your opinion on Simona. For me she is like a 5'6 genius and she is amazing against all these big girls. She is a unique player. People are just starting to see that. Thats why she is doing so well! :D The rivals havent sussed her game style yet !
You are in a good company. Navratilova didnt gave her any chance in Doha, or Madrid, or anywhere.
I remember the predictions of Navratilova and Nigel Sears (Ana former coach) in the QFs stage in Doha. She was one of the last 8 and they didnt even mention her name as a potential event winner. She won.
Many great tennis people dont understand her style yet and its good. She can win that way. :D

I don't know what was up, but we won't know until Serena speaks about the situation. She looked very upset and inconsolable.

For me just as a tennis fan (sometimes fans can see what coaches cant becasue of a more distant look),
I think she overcame today her weakness and her fears and beat her demons. This win is HUGE for Angie. It will give her confidence. She just beat the hottest player on tour. She must feel she can beat anyone now!
So, for me today was a mental win and her problems were mental. Her tennis is good enough for me!
Caro became NO.1 with defensive style. No problems with that.

I think that Angie changed mentally, similar to what Simona did, but not to such extent.
She can lose matches (to Genie), but she is a better player now because she is better mentally.

Maria in the last seven years she's made it past the 4th rd just once, that was in 2011,when she lost to Kvitova in 2011.
