first time I've really watched Berankis. Colour me impressed!

Have liked Berankis for years... but even more fragile than Nishikori. And I don't think he's more than 5'7", even if the ATP states otherwise. Kid can play tennis though, that's for dang sure.

According to the odd makers, close encounters could be:
Kudla - Zverev

I'm sure those could go either way. I'm hoping for Zverev, who also has higher rank and height advantage.

I will never get how you guys from USA are always pulling for their opponents.

He Ukrainian herios!

:puzzled:s:blush: Oh that's right; you cheer wildly for the Montenegrin with big nostrils.

Kudla came here at age 1, and is naturalized. I looked it up, since I didn't know. He's just not on my radar. Not sure why herios thinks he should have a "fanbase," ranked 120. But he is a US player, and Raonic is Canadian. It's not nearly the same as Bedene playing for GBR, or all those Russians playing for Kazakstan.

it was supposedly the hottest day ever for a Wimbledon days play..:faint

somewhere nearby was over 36c 97f. which is also the hottest july day ever recorded in the uk, humidity was pretty high as well which adds to the enervating effect.

and alexander zverev lost in 5. bah.

The top half is shaping up nicely. Of the 8 third round matches that are set-up by today's winners only 2 are low-ley matches (Kudla vs. Giralso and Mayer vs. Anderson). All the rest are interesting matches.

^I did see some women fanning themselves rather furiously, and those lines people looked sweaty in the long-sleeved shirts. The players seemed to handle it ok, though. Tomorrow should be much finer: 87/30.

Yes, I know he came here as a babe. I was not being serious, simply razzing herios.

Chris Fowler asked a couple of interesting questions: Dustin Brown and Andreas Haider-Mauer just lost in doubles to a couple of guys I never heard of (US/NZ) in 5 sets over nearly 3 1/2 in the heat. 1. Haider-Mauer retired after under 2 sets on Monday v. Berankis in singles. How does that work? and 2. Is a 5 setter good prep for Dustin Brown's match v. Rafa tomorrow? Food for thought.

Five setter doubles is not tiring. It will be a good practice and it will sharpen your volleys.

Normally, I agree with that, esp. at MS level, but that's why I mentioned the length of the match, and the heat. Would you practice the day before a match at a major for 3.5 hrs. in 93 degree heat? I don't think that would be sensible.

You got to realize that DB being ranked outside 100 most probably does not have a big entourage. In particular, these guys may not even have a hitting partner. The best way to prepare for the match is by actually playing a competitive one.

Also, the fact that it went for full five sets and 3.5 hours and he managed to finish the match (even though he lost) without serious cramps/dehydration etc, would give him added confidence that he has enough fuel in the tank in case the match tomorrow does not get over quickly.
