What a great effort by Haas. He might have won if he had gotten it to a third set. I'm thinking Kyrgios will upset Raonic in the 3rd after seeing them play today.

Or make that a fifth set... In my defense, the clock was about to strike midnight

Milos finishes Haas off with a nice backhand pass. Wasted too many chances, looked average and looked like he was struggling with the conditions. I would have given the edge to Haas, age and all, if this went to the 5th.

Milos was sharp in the first set, but started struggling through the second set, despite winning that set also easily.
Too many mistakes in the final 2 sets with some lazy footwork as well. probably the heat was a factor as you said.

Chris Fowler asked a couple of interesting questions: Dustin Brown and Andreas Haider-Mauer just lost in doubles to a couple of guys I never heard of (US/NZ) in 5 sets over nearly 3 1/2 in the heat. 1. Haider-Mauer retired after under 2 sets on Monday v. Berankis in singles. How does that work? and 2. Is a 5 setter good prep for Dustin Brown's match v. Rafa tomorrow? Food for thought.

Five setter doubles is not tiring. It will be a good practice and it will sharpen your volleys.

As long as you don't default that day, you aren't disqualified from the doubles! It's only happened once that I can remember when the player didn't realize he would be "dropped" from the draw of a match to be played later! I can't remember who it was, but it wasn't in the top 4; somewhere in the next tier! The same happened to at least 1 woman! I'm thinking Venus since she pulled that a couple times when destined to play Serena! Anybody? :puzzled :nono  :dodgy:

That was a great fight by Haas. It is not easy to play competitively after being more than an year away,

If he's remotely tired, he'll probably go for broke and he'll either take Rafa out or seriously endanger people in the expensive seats :snicker

Breaking news Kei Nishikori withdraws with a calf injury

The glasshouse crumbles again. The chances of him winning a GS is next to nil considering his age and his injury issues.

Normally, I agree with that, esp. at MS level, but that's why I mentioned the length of the match, and the heat. Would you practice the day before a match at a major for 3.5 hrs. in 93 degree heat? I don't think that would be sensible.

BTW, both Cilic v. Berankis and Verdasco v. Thiem are pretty entertaining, though Verdasco is his usually unpredictable self.

According to the odd makers, close encounters could be:
Kudla - Zverev
Verdasco - Thiem

I'm sure those could go either way. I'm hoping for Zverer, who also has higher rank and height advantage.

I will never get how you guys from USA are always pulling for their opponents.

I always thought that's what set us apart from the rest of the world who had "blind loyalty" for someone just because of where they were born! I grew up with Borg and Goolagong my faves! Was I supposed to support Connors and Evert just because they were from the US? I think not; never happen! :nono  :dodgy:

It's an individual sport, herios, not a team one. I root for US in DC and Olympics. But I wasn't rooting against Kudla...I didn't even think about him being from the US. I was rooting for Zverev, because he's a promising teenager and I like his game.
