I just read somewhere that Medvedev is yet to reach a major quarterfinal... well, he is not the new #1 but he may be the new Zverev :lol6::lol6::lol6::lol6: he is one R1 exit away from that!

Seriously, I think he is playing great -- since February (you guys can check the Sofia 250 thread). But this is something that he needs to go through, obviously. Just checked his major results, really bellow his capabilities. One quality loss this year at AO agains Djokovic though, his last result a R3 exit in the hands of Goffin, btw (ok, a good opponent). This year's AO 4th round is his best result.

Medvedev,

How much does he have left in the tank for a USO run? I would be pleasantly surprised if he makes it to his first Major QTR at Flushing Meadows. I like the kid, but man, that’s a lot of HC matches in a compressed time period.

This week's rest is placed right where he needs it. He is just 23 and should be able to recover his body well. Of course one needs a bit of draw help always and some easier opponents in the first week won't hurt.

With regards to him never reaching QF in majors is understandable given his quick rise in rankings since the last year. i refuse to think he is a new Zverev. He is hitting 190 km 2nd serves like it'a nothing, while the other is happy if he even makes a 2nd serve.

Medvedev dipped considerably during clay and grass swing hence the losses there. Seems like HC is his favourite surface for his flat hitting tennis.

Although, I don't have anything against Medvedev, I have a vague hunch that his ceiling might be less than that of Thiem, Tsitsipas and even Kachanov. In other words, I think if I have to bet on somebody winning a Slam, I would put money on several other next genners before before I would consider Medvedev.

Very well said. He is nothing like Zverev, who for the last 3 yearss is underperforming in slams.
To date, he has not dissapointed aside maybe RG in the last 2 years.
Clay is clearly his weakest surface, he has not passed beyond R1 yet.
But everywhere else he managed to live up to his ranking.
Let's not forget, last year through the first 3 slams he ,as still ranked only in the 50-60 range and only by the USO he was ranked 36, but he still was unseeded.
Only this year he started to be seeded.
I am betting that he will reach his first QF at the USO, especially because HC is where he excells.

Well observed that his results matched his rankings at the time. I was half-joking, but I was a bit surprised anyway. The ranking correlation explains it all, though.

Anyway, if he happens to lose early at the USOPEN, rest assured that you will hear that comparison a lot... (but I got the point already).

The unknown factor is with added expectations how well he handles the pressure on the big stage. Medvedev certainly is not under the radar now for the USO.

I still say the pattern will continue w/ these new guys; success breeds weariness! I'm betting he doesn't even make the Rd. of 16!

Tiredness is overrated for an young player like Medvedev. He will have a good run at USO, but won't win. I expect him to definitely reach R16 and probably reach QF and possibly reach SF. I also definitely don't expect him to go any further than that.

Nadal will take back the no.1 spot after Djokovic... Then the next no.1 after him will be Auger Aliassime in about 2 years...

I would not bet on Nadal retaking number 1 again.

Nadal will get it next,

then he will retire with the slam record,

and then it will be Medvedev...

I still think Auger Aliassime has a lot of potential to eventually become no.1,

but it will be a few years from now as he is still very young...

I am hoping for Medvedev, but I fear he could end up like the other rising stars we have seen in recent years.

He needs to avoid King Nadal, but otherwise he should be able to beat everyone else...

It looks like I will be right again...:bye:

Your self-congratulation reflects poorly on you. I thought you demonstrated aspirations beyond merely trolling. Do try not to be such a douche.

When hell freezes over. You are the worst of what other fans think of Nadal fans. Rafa doesn't need your ridiculous and outrageous claims on his behalf. He is plenty great enough. Fed fans just wait for Nadal fans to make it stupid. And there you do an amazing job.

I'm going to be nice if Nole manages to regain & retain the #1 ranking by year's end & not point out this ridiculous thread! :nono: :cuckoo:
I'm still wondering, though, how you're going to feel about it, if he does, by adding, say, Basel, and screwing up his AO? You have been so insulting about what it took Murray to get it in '16. Is it less denigrating if Djokovic goes all-out for it this year?
