China has now dropped down to 3rd place in terms of total deaths according to the published data. Of course only the truly naïve actually believe that. The way they captured data at the start is highly suspicious, as they only tended to list primary causes. No doubt there have been loads of people with underlying conditions where the immediate cause has been COVID-19... lies, damned lies and statistics!

Just for the record, current slope and number of deaths with COVID-19 is FAR worse than H1N1 at a similar stage (80 days in).

This is horrifying, but for the purpose of this forum, very amusing, considering what our resident black humorist/gigolo/history expert/political savant/science genius was saying.

Maybe he didn't mean it. It could have been just a typo. I mean, holding an orange dick in one hand and typing with the other must be hard work.

Meltdown that I'll ignore in 3...2...1

it's becoming clear to me that "10" either suffers from temporal dyslexia or simply can't understand charts. Either way he's certainly not getting 10/10 for his insights...

I already read the book, so I couldn't bear the film. Yeah, I know I have to go while the getting is still good. I really hate leaving NYC, though. A house to pack up and friends to leave. It's not easy, and the rising tide does feel like a slow creep, even now.
I got told the book is really bleak. No wonder, you didn't rush to the movies. Good luck with your move if you decide to go.

I keep hearing a bunch of rumours that Prince Phillip has snuffed it. Probably bullshit.
that went around WhatsApp last week. I would like to find the idiots who get a kick out of fake news like that and give them a proper beating..

Our retarded in chief's unbelieveable last night speech is still making waves here. I google translated one open letter from all State Secretaries of Health. Brazil is divided in states much in the same way USA is. This is signed by ALL secretaries of health across the nation, which has governors of a plethora of different political parties, some of them support the president. Just for you guys have an idea of the level of surrealism of things going here.

Letter from the State Secretaries of Health of Brazil after a statement by the President of the Republic

Posted on | 24 Mar 2020

We were appalled by the announcement by the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, on a national chain.

It is necessary to demonstrate to Brazil its consequences and the need for the population to realize the seriousness of the moment we are living.

We have, together with the Ministry of Health, the municipalities and the Brazilian society itself, engaged in an intense struggle to face Covid-19.

Struggle that involves work, sacrifice, solidarity, empathy, compassion for people's suffering and that depends in an essential way on the alignment of understanding and actions, as well as on the union of efforts and a single and firm direction.

All decisions and recommendations by Conass and the Ministry of Health have been based on scientific evidence, in national and international reality and have sought inspiration in best practices and examples of successful conduct around the world.

This is the effort we have made to defend our homeland and our Brazilian brothers and sisters. It is in this way, dismayed and courageous, in the right direction that we want to follow the mission of defending our people.

We have no intention of politicizing the problem. We have been building, without difficulty, independent of party, political and ideological coloring, consensus for the good of the Unified Health System - SUS [equivalent to NHS in UK] and, above all, with the health of the Brazilian people. This is our commitment. This is what guides our actions and efforts.

We already have too many difficulties to face.

We cannot allow dissent and dubiousness in conducting the confrontation with Covid-19. Thus, what appears to be a serious error by the President of the Republic needs to be repaired.

Instead of undoing all the effort and sacrifice that we have made together with the Brazilian people, denying all the technically based and defended recommendations, including by his Ministry of Health, we should see the President of the Republic leading the fight, contributing to this effort and leading the nation to where its main ruler is expected: a safe place to live, with health and well being.

Unfortunately, what we saw in his speech was an attempt to demobilize Brazilian society, health authorities across the country.

His speech makes it difficult for everyone, including his minister and technicians.

All the support for the work of the Ministry of Health and its team, which has been working technically and scientifically at all times. With health, you cannot play or place bets, given the risk we run. It takes discernment, courage and determination to lead, unify and assist the nation in overcoming this Public Health Emergency challenge.

We are fully aware that Brazil and the world will face a severe economic recession, deepening social inequalities and impoverishment.

The economy, with work, discipline, organization and public spirit, will recover. We will be supportive and work tirelessly to allow a quick recovery of our economy.

But it is necessary to understand, lost lives, will never be recovered.

May God bless each of us who have been working hard and sleeping little.

May God bless and protect all Brazilians.

@mrzz (and @Murat Baslamisli) - do you think you are a little less sceptical about this virus and the reaction to it as before? I know you weren't overtly slamming it as hysteria, but I picked up a healthy sceptical vibe. I had that same feeling initially. However, the way governments reacted across the globe with such forceful measures, made me realise that this was pretty damn serious. Not to mention, the ways are unfolding in Italy, Spain... and the patterns emerging in France, UK, most mainland European countries, and at an early stage in the US.

I admit I missjudged the reach and the scale it would acquire (actually, the right tense is "will"). But I am even more of the opinion that a vertical approach would have been better, specially in places where you have structure. But, once one country after another started to go for an horizontal approach (which is much easier to implement, technically speaking), almost no political leader had the guts to bet alone on a vertical approach.

There was, and there is still, hysteria. And -- this is the worst part for me -- most of the action already driven by sheer political calculation. That is discussing. But the problem is right there in front of us and cannot be ignored no matter what I think about the big player's actions.

Anyway, after I complained initially about the IW cancellation, I changed completely my tone because of one simple thing: I am well aware that there are a lot of things that I don't know, and I simply won't debate from a false position of certainty, since basically no one is pretty sure of anything.

for Western developed economies it seems the German method is by far the best. Go overboard on the test... early

The way we are handling this in Canada, I am actually more skeptical but I am keeping these opinions to myself because certain things are not allowed be discussed here. But I have one question: What is the end game here?

No idea mate. Absolutely none. I'm not sceptical about the virus contagion, but I've got an open mind on how it started. Random? An accident? By Design? I wouldn't rule anything out.

Exactly, and think how much I like Viggo Mortensen. It's beautifully written, but one of those books you'd just feel wrong recommending to anyone. So much else to read by Cormac McCarthy.

I don't think there's something not "allowed" to be discussed here. And you're not usually shy about a fight. :)
