You aren't missing anything. It's (yet) another case where a nation state has offered refuge to a "persecuted" refugee and it's been thrown in their face by a complete tw@t. As murat said, this is a scumbag hiding under a religious cloak. If a single hostage is harmed then this guy needs to be put down.

My web news site is saying the event is over and that there were gunshots. Brace yourselves for much more of this around what the ISIS animals view as fair game for jihad--which is most anyplace on earth except China (where they likely can't get in or last very long).

Doesn't look like this thing ended well :(

The scumbag might be dead, but unconfirmed reports say 2 dead, 3 seriously injured.

This guy apparently was on the radar screen of everyone for a while. Had a big rap sheet.

This is the new reality folks. Like what happened in Canada, now in Sydney, these guys , who on the surface have no ties to any extremist group, will do their own thing on a smaller scale and it will be very tough to figure out when and where. Only two things can help stop these things : Governments not being soft on these scumbags and be extremely selective in their immigration and refugee selective process, and Muslim communities keeping an eye on these extremists and saying something BEFORE crap hits the fan, as opposed to only condemning the action after the fact. These "lone wolves" must have said something to someone...:nono

There are sometimes confused narratives involved in stuff like this, and you get trolls who sympathise with these Islamist nuts and say we've got it coming, but this shows the wretchedness of that argument when the guy was actually there as an act of mercy and his extreme villains nature still turned and bit the hand.

I agree with you, Murat, tighter control on immigration - but also, these worms don't just turn on a whim. There's a vapour trail somewhere here that's been ignored. A fairly dirty and loud one, in his case...

The man is described in BBC as an Iranian refugee who's out on bail for being an accessory in the murder of his former wife and there maybe up to 40 other charges of sexual assault pending ...

Why was he even allowed to get out on bail? This guy seems like the perfect example of why some criminals should be held without bail.

It's the seventy five billion dollar question and I imagined it's going to be repeatedly asked for the next few weeks, without any satisfactory answers...

This should have not happened in the first place, this man was a known offender to the police,he was up on 'sexual charges' awaiting a court trial,he should have been in jail. Our laws Have To Be Changed Now,it is the NSW governments fault this massacre happened. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all the hostages and also the innocents victims that were murdered, one a 38 year old woman with 3 small children, who will now grow up without a mother.

What to people think about The Interview not getting released by Sony because of the North Korea threats?

I think it is depressing, irrespective of how mediocre it might have been. I thought film censorship had been rendered obsolete over the last 50 years. I mean, there is an outside entity (confirmed now to have originated in North Korea) threatening a corporation and the individual citizens of the United States if a particular film is released. I sincerely believe that the people of America (and any other state in general) should feel protected from such outside threats, and should not feel as though we must live in fear from them. It doesn't matter what the content of the film is - it is not right for one country to succumb to the apocalyptic rhetoric of another, especially when it comes to artistic mediums that are expressive and democratic. This is the 'thin edge of the wedge' and sets a dangerous precedent for the future.

What's next, Putin makes threats against South Park because he doesn't like being mocked? Islamic extremists carrying out similar threats for how they feel their religion and/or ideologies are being represented in films, video games and books? The Christian right wing? Where is the line drawn between exercising the hard-fought freedoms of the United States, including that of speech, and cowering in fear from every tyrant who makes an slothful threat? What Sony has done has set a perilous and misleading example.

And, besides, we all know North Korea have a maddening propensity to spout endless rhetoric and threats and never follow up on them. Every few months North Korea postulate silly babble to get attention from the international community and to receive more aid. Heck, North Korea understands that attacking the United States, a nuclear weapon state and the world's most commanding military superpower, is suicide. NK's only real ally, China, certainly would not allow it either. These idle threats are no different. This was simply a terrible decision by Sony and one that could consequently have many repercussions because it sends an egregious and vunlerable message.

I think it sets the bar very low as a reaction to threats. The most nutjob nation on the planet was able to stop a film being shown? Wouldn't happen if Clint was in it.

On the other hand, I'm getting great chucks out of the leaked emails. Totally agree about Angelina, she used to be edgy but now she's just boring - and who knows what she's ever written about them in emails, right? Who knew it with George? Jennifer Lawrence - again?

In a serious note, hacking is always wrong, but isn't it hilarious what they say in Tinseltown? :laydownlaughing

It is a shame that the movie is pretty much shelved. It looked lame anyways but that is not the point. NK is never going to do anything. They have a crazy leader but even he is not that crazy. Guys at Sony are a bunch of wusses.

To be fair it is the gutless theater chains that caused the pull of the movies. Great post Matt. It is very sad and stupid.

I'm not sure how much this matters, but keep in mind Sony is, technically, a Japanese corporation. I don't know how much influence people in that country had in this decision, but it's possible this was not decided by just Hollywood executives.

Okay, so now being obese has been classified as a disability by the stoopah bureaucratic tyrants in the EU, the same dumb people who told us that drinking water doesn't help if you're dehydrated.

I have every sympathy with anyone who's a bit overweight - or thirsty - but we don't need dumb stupid regulations from these eejits that reclassify everything as potential victimhood that actually victimises the rest of us, especially companies that now have to pander to this "disability". Time was, your mother would tell you you're getting fat and instruct you to eat less and run around more.

Oh, and she also knew that when you're thirsty you should drink more water... :cover
