Cali started with cherry picking matches again, Oh check this match, check that point. Here is my suggestion Cali: Why don't you check his CAREER now that it is over. I will remind you: 1 slam final, 11 titles overall, 7 of them 250s.

He is just not relevant man, just let him retire in peace.

And since he is retired, we have a separate forum to discuss those players:

Actually since Stan has now jumped over "another Swiss player" in the rankings I'm not so sure if his fans are really all that happy?

Oh, they're happy. Whenever Rafa gets injured, Roger's legacy hears ker-ching. They're very happy today, and who can blame them... ;)

I'm not happy about Rafa getting hurt K.

Just means if Rafa ends up not passing Feds slam mark, I'll never hear the end of "Yeah but if he had never been hurt he would have had 30 Slams and Roger would be still stuck on 13!"

;)

There ya go, buddy, hope you didn't mind me fixing it for ya... :snigger

Apparently you missed the post Fedal match thread with the various calculations of how Roger would rightly have had 25. That one cuts both ways. ;)

Not a conversation I took place in however :)

Either way, Federer and Nadal are immensely fortunate that Nalbandian wasn't healthy and relevant more often. This era would have looked completely different.

Nalbandian was just as solid in rallies as Nadal, but a much more effortless and natural offensive shotmaker. Nalbandian also was just as good of a shotmaker as Federer, except that his BH side wasn't weak like Federer's and he could last much better in long rallies. Plus, Nalbandian was a more talented volleyer than both.

Nalbandian could do just as much damage off the forehand as both of them, but with a backhand that was even better. Smh, truly smh

And I bet he was faster than Usain Bolt and stronger than Arnold too...

Uh dude, don't go there. I don't know if you remember, but he literally once argued that Nalbandian moves as well as Djokovic and Nadal.

Oh I remember that pearl of wisdom well.

Watch his 2009 IW match with Nadal and tell me that Nadal was a better mover, by more than a negligible .000001%.

Watch Nalbandian's 2008 Bercy match against Murray with long rallies, when Murray was #2 and riding a 14-match win streak and had just beaten Nadal at the US Open in a grueling 4-set rally war.

Then tell me Nalbandian couldn't move as well as those guys. Please.

Djokovic is obviously more elastic and longer, but does he have more explosive burst than Nalbandian? No way.

So on the record: Is Nalbandian as good a mover as Nadal? Yes or no question.

At times he was, yes. Overall, no. Nadal has been much more durable and much more consistent moving at a high level.

thread title sums up the experience perfectly. nonetheless, congrats to Stan, who probably deserves the title, no matter how hard he tried not to get it.

Lol. But House makes a meaningful point. Tennis matches are won on court and not handed around hypothetically. Today just proved again that nothing is given or certain.

Yup. Anything can and does happen in sport as today showed. You can count me in as one of those who thought #14 was in the bag for Nadal today but look how things turn out.

Indeed.. a splendid refutation of all those who like to add asterisks...

I had, of course, no idea that Rafa would get injured. But I felt before the Match started he was in trouble because Brad Gilbert said he "hoped Stan would take a set off Rafa"! And Brad Gilbert is awful at predicting matches.

I've learnt over the years that nothing is ever carved in stone in sports. Who'd have thought Ana Ivanovic would beat Serena Williams or Radwanska would make a monkey out of Azarenka. You can't keep losing to the same player all the time. Eventually you'll get a win. Even Roddick beat Federer 3 times out of 24 matches. LOL, had typed something about Roddick beating Fed in a slam match that didn't exist. Muddled.

Anyway, you usually get the better of an opponent who has owned you eventually more often than not.

Horrible match that started interestingly. Huge shock for us Rafa fans that he got injured again, we thought he'd weathered his bad luck with the blister.

Stan was badly affected too and he struggled to get composure and take advantage. Rafa couldn't move - and Stan couldn't make him move. He could in the first! But that's the pressure of playing a first GS final, and against a great champion, and then add in an injury.

A player with more experience at that level would have taken it in straights, but Stan was great in the last few games, battling nerves and the historical significance of the moment.

Stan played great in the first and Rafa was tense. I wonder if tension caused the back injury? Who can know? But Stan beat Nole and that's another sign of how great he was at this tourney. Well done to him!

I don't think he has any fans on this forum so I've nobody else to congratulate! ;)

Here am I a fan of Wawrinka :) You can congratulate me :)
Unfortunately I could catch only a few games of the third set, as I had to go on house hunting to find house for family for rent.
Nobody gave Wawrinka a chance, but I knew he could beat Nadal. Someone posted on twitter that Stan has never even won a set against Nadal and I had replied there is always a first time for everything and Stan proved it today. So happy for him.
