Barack Obama, His Mother, and the CIA
Guest | July 5, 2012 7 Comments
So Why the Omission?
William Blum
0705_Barack1.png
In his autobiography, Dreams From My Fathers, Barack Obama writes of taking a job at some point after graduating from Columbia University in 1983. He describes his employer as "a consulting house to multinational corporations" in New York City, and his functions as a "research assistant" and "financial writer".

Oddly, Obama doesn't mention the name of his employer. However, a New York Times story of October 30, 2007 identifies the company as Business International Corporation. Equally odd is that the Times did not remind its readers that the newspaper itself had disclosed in 1977 that Business International had provided cover for four CIA employees in various countries between 1955 and 1960.10

The British journal, Lobster — which, despite its incongruous name, is a venerable international publication on intelligence matters — has reported that Business International was active in the 1980s promoting the candidacy of Washington-favored candidates in Australia and Fiji.11 In 1987, the CIA overthrew the Fiji government after but one month in office because of its policy of maintaining the island as a nuclear-free zone, meaning that American nuclear-powered or nuclear-weapons-carrying ships could not make port calls.12 After the Fiji coup, the candidate supported by Business International, who was much more amenable to Washington's nuclear desires, was reinstated to power — R.S.K. Mara was Prime Minister or President of Fiji from 1970 to 2000, except for the one-month break in 1987.

In his book, not only doesn't Obama mention his employer's name; he fails to say exactly when he worked there, or why he left the job. There may well be no significance to these omissions, but inasmuch as Business International has a long association with the world of intelligence, covert actions, and attempts to penetrate the radical left — including Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)13 — it's reasonable to wonder if the inscrutable Mr. Obama is concealing something about his own association with this world.

Adding to the wonder is the fact that his mother, Ann Dunham, had been associated during the 1970s and 80s — as employee, consultant, grantee, or student — with at least five organizations with intimate CIA connections during the Cold War: The Ford Foundation, Agency for International Development (AID), the Asia Foundation, Development Alternatives, Inc., and the East-West Center of Hawaii.14 Much of this time she worked as an anthropologist in Indonesia and Hawaii, being in good position to gather intelligence about local communities.

As one example of the CIA connections of these organizations, consider the disclosure by John Gilligan, Director of AID during the Carter administration (1977-81). "At one time, many AID field offices were infiltrated from top to bottom with CIA people. The idea was to plant operatives in every kind of activity we had overseas, government, volunteer, religious, every kind."15 And Development Alternatives, Inc. is the organization for whom Alan Gross was working when arrested in Cuba and charged with being part of the ongoing American operation to destabilize the Cuban government.

Obama and His Family Tied to CIA for Years
By Sherwood Ross

September 6, 2010

Recently by Sherwood Ross: The CIA: Beyond Redemption and Should BeTerminated

President Obama – as well as his mother, father, step-father and grandmother – all were connected to the Central Intelligence Agency – possibly explaining why the President praises the “Agency” and declines to prosecute its officials for their crimes.

According to a published report in the September Rock Creek Free Press of Washington, D.C., investigative reporter Wayne Madsen says Obama’s mother Ann Dunham worked “on behalf of a number of CIA front operations, including the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Ford Foundation.” The East-West Center had long been affiliated with CIA activities in the Asia-Pacific region, Madsen says.

What’s more, Obama’s father, Barack Obama Sr., arrived in Hawaii from Kenya as part of a CIA program to identify and train Africans who would be useful to the Agency in its Cold War operations against the Soviets, Madsen says. Obama Sr. divorced Ms. Dunham in 1964.

Ms. Dunham married Lolo Soetoro the following year, a man Madsen says assisted in the violent CIA coup against Indonesian President Sukarno that claimed a million lives. Obama’s mother taught English for USAID, “which was a major cover for CIA activities in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia,” Madsen reports. That USAID was a cover for CIA covert operations in Laos was admitted by its administrator Dr. John Hannah on Metromedia News. Madsen says the organization was also a cover for the CIA in Indonesia.

Ms. Dunham worked in Indonesia at a time when Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities(MUCIA) – a group that included the University of Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Minnesota and Indiana – was accused of being a front for CIA activities in Indonesia and elsewhere. Ms. Dunham traveled to Ghana, Nepal, Bangladesh, India and Thailand “working on micro-financing projects” for the CIA, Madsen reports.

And Ms. Dunham’s mother, Madelyn Dunham – who raised Obama while his mother was on assignment in Indonesia – acted as vice president of the Bank of Hawaii in Honolulu, which Madsen says was used by various CIA front entities. She handled escrow accounts used to make CIA payments “to U.S.-supported Asian dictators” including Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, South Vietnamese President Nguyen van Thieu, and President Suharto in Indonesia, Madsen says.

“In effect, the bank was engaged in money laundering for the CIA to prop up covertly its favored leaders in the Asia-Pacific region,” Madsen writes. “It is clear that Dunham Soetoro and her Indonesian husband, President Obama’s step-father, were closely involved in the CIA’s operations to steer Indonesia away from the Sino-Soviet orbit after the overthrow of Sukarno.”

“President Obama’s own work in 1983 for Business International Corporation, a CIA front that conducted seminars with the world’s most powerful leaders and used journalists as agents abroad, dovetails with CIA espionage activities conducted by his mother,” Madsen says. “There are volumes of written material on the CIA backgrounds of George H.W. Bush and CIA-related activities by his father and children, including former President George W. Bush. Barack Obama, on the other hand, cleverly masked his own CIA connections as well as those of his mother, father, step-father, and grandmother,” Madsen points out.

A review of the influence on the Oval Office by the CIA, particularly since the presidency of Bush Sr., a former director of the Agency, it becomes apparent the Agency has played a major role in the shaping of U.S. foreign policy – a role that has been largely kept secret from the American public and one which most Americans would not have approved. The CIA’s overthrow of the democratic government of Iran in 1953 is an example. The overthrow occurred after the Iranian government nationalized the oil industry following alleged cheating on payments by contractor British Petroleum, then known as Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. For another, the CIA’s widespread use of illegal rendition and torture of suspects is repugnant to Americans who still believe in their Constitution.

Russian Spies and America’s Reality TV Election
Sputnik
Some media outlets sniped at

Trump’s surprise election
calling him the “first reality TV star to become president”. In truth, the whole US political system seems to be a reality TV show.

In the weeks up to polling day on November 8, Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton and large sections of the US media were denouncing Trump as a “Russian stooge”. Trump’s alleged friendliness towards Russian President Vladimir Putin was said to be proof that the Republican candidate was a “Kremlin agent”.

The Kremlin rejected the accusations as fatuous, pointing out that there was not a scintilla of evidence.

The claims, however, were not merely electioneering rhetoric to smear Trump. The Obama administration officially weighed in to accuse Russia of

state-sponsored hacking of computer systems
and “interfering in the US election” to get Trump elected. The White House based its provocative allegations on an assessment made by the Director of National Intelligence and Department of Homeland Security. In other words, US accusations of Russian subversion could not have been leveled in a more serious way.

That means, if you follow this logic, that Trump is now heading to occupy the White House thanks to Russian espionage and propaganda influencing the vote in his favor.

So, what then was outgoing President Obama doing holding photo ops with “Comrade Trump” in the Oval Office, smiling and exchanging pleasantries? At one point, the incumbent Commander-in-Chief said he was “rooting for Trump’s presidency to succeed because if it does then America will succeed”.

Hold on a moment. Only days before this avuncular tete-a-tete marking the “peaceful transition of power”, Obama’s administration and the mainstream media were labelling Trump as a Russian fifth columnist.

© AP Photo/ Pablo Martinez Monsivais

Obama had also mocked Trump as being “uniquely unqualified” to be president with access to the nuclear keys.

It is notable how US media claims of Russian spying and interference suddenly ceased the day after Trump was elected.

Granted, there have since been lame attempts to make something sinister out of the news that Russian diplomats were admittedly in touch with Trump and Clinton campaign aides before the election. Apart from that damp-squib story that the New York Times and Washington Post tried to enliven, for the most part the “Russian hacker” hue and cry before the election has strangely disappeared from the public arena.

In the light of Trump’s cordial reception at the White House and the general acceptance by the Washington establishment including President Obama, defeated candidate Hillary Clinton and the mainstream media, that is stunning evidence that the whole anti-Russia bashing prior to the election was completely concocted and disingenuous.

Think about it. How could Trump be painted one day as a beneficiary of Russian espionage, and then the next day literally, he is being feted as the “45th president of the USA” – whom, as Obama says, “we are rooting for”?

This demonstrates how degraded US statecraft has become. The government, its intelligence services and the country’s supposed quality news media are all prepared to fabricate and propagate lies against a foreign state – Russia. Obviously, because how could serious concerns one day be so easily jettisoned the next?

Evidently, the demonization of Russia as a hostile, interfering foreign power trying to upend US internal politics is a gross falsehood. Otherwise why would Trump be officially accepted? And why have all the grave media claims just vanished?

But a much more serious aspect to this official US propaganda is that it illustrates how Russia is being set up more generally as an “enemy state”. Recall that US intelligence agencies were reportedly preparing to launch cyber attacks on Russian infrastructure all on the back of claims that Russia was hacking into the American presidential elections. If somehow US cyber attacks were carried out to cripple Russian industries and public utilities that would have constituted an act of war. Russia would have been obliged to respond, and the whole dangerous dynamic could have escalated to an all-out war.

If US government and its intelligence agencies, as well as supposedly independent news media, are seen to be so disingenuous, then that destroys their credibility on other matters. Can you believe anything they say about Russia with regard to allegedly threatening European security or committing war crimes in Syria?

For his part, Donald Trump also plays a starring role in the US democracy charade. During their fireside meeting in the White House, the billionaire property tycoon called Obama a “very good man” and said that he would seek his counsel in the future.

This is the same “very good man” whom Trump had earlier accused of being the “creator of the ISIS [Daesh] terror group”. Along with Clinton, Trump had rallied his supporters to view Obama as a treasonous criminal for waging illegal wars in the Middle East.

Well, that’s a spectacular U-turn by the fiery, big-mouth anti-politician Trump. If he can so quickly accommodate himself to such apparently hated political enemies and effectively drop all charges then one wonders what else Trump will renege on?

Will he really “drain the swamp” of Washington’s oligarchic establishment? Will he deliver on “making America great again” by investing in the “forgotten people” who elected him? Will he really de-escalate American overseas militarism and NATO aggression towards Russia?

It was surely a good thing that Hillary Clinton was not elected as president. Her warmongering record as former Secretary of State speaks for itself, as does her overt Russophobia.

But we should not be under illusions that a Trump presidency represents a new contrite and cooperative America.

An American president is only ever a figurehead for a system and structure of power. That system relies on militarism and war to project US hegemony in the world. Without hegemonic relationships and imperialist conduct, US capitalism as we know it would collapse.

And Trump is a raw-toothed capitalist. His early selections show a preference for further neoliberal deregulation of capital, as well as surrounding himself with his family and business cronies.

Trump may be a pragmatic businessman inclined to form relations free from ideology. Potentially, that is a good thing for improving US relations with Russia and other foreign powers.

Nevertheless, it would be naive to expect one individual to radically change a political system. It is not hard to imagine that when Trump enters the White House formally in 1o weeks that the military-intelligence-corporate apparatus of American capitalism will impress on him how the system works. And he will oblige.

Trump’s polite deference to Obama this week, and vice versa, shows in an unintended way what Obama meant when he said “we are all on one team”. That “team” is the American oligarchy. It is not the American nation. Disenfranchised working-class Americans may simply have gotten Trump into the “team” – against their genuine aspirations for radical democratic change.

The rapid disappearance of Russian hacker allegations as well as Trump’s anti-establishment bombast suggest that American “democracy” is all just one giant reality TV show.

Donald Trump and the Humiliation of the MSM 'Experts'
Sputnik
Galloway summed it up perfectly in one tweet, as it became clear that Donald J. Trump, against all the odds, was to become the 45th President of the United States of America:

There was no way the unspeakably awful Donald Trump would prevail, the MSM assured us. A victory for the quite wonderful Hillary Clinton was a slam dunk. After all, everyone in our circle is going to vote for her!

Bill Kristol, the editor of the neocon Weekly Standard and a regular pundit on US television, scoffed at the idea that Trump would even win a single caucus or primary.

"Here's why Donald Trump won't win the Republican nomination" was the title of one piece in August 2015.

Tom McCarthy said that while "knowledgeable people" thought Trump might get the nomination, "more knowledgeable people thought he wouldn't." And probably, by this logic, "the least knowledgeable people" of all thought Trump would not only win the nomination, but the White House as well. But we never heard from them. Except on channels like RT, whose "obscure pundits" — to coin a phrase of a particularly poisonous stalker, again outdid the "experts" we see regularly on elite-friendly programs like BBC's Newsnight.

Then there's the pollsters.

They were wrong about the 2015 UK general election, and they were wrong about the EU Referendum. And they were hopelessly wrong about the US Presidential election too. Not a single poll for instance, had Trump winning the state of Wisconsin.

In the last few days, almost all the polls showed significant leads for Hillary Clinton.

Surely, after this latest debacle, no one can trust pollsters ever again.

Politicians too, with the exception of outside-the-tent populists like George Galloway and Nigel Farage, demonstrated how out of touch they were with public opinion.

In August, Politico ran a piece entitled "GOP Insiders: Trump can't win."

"Trump is underperforming so comprehensively… it would take video evidence of a smiling Hillary drowning a litter of puppies while terrorists surrounded her with chants of 'Death to America,' " was the verdict of an Iowa Republican.

Well, guess what, that video evidence of Clinton as Cruella de Vil did not emerge, and The Donald still won.

Throughout the summer we also had dire warnings in the US MSM that Trump was leading the GOP into oblivion.

Well, the Republicans now have the Presidency, the Senate and the House.

Some oblivion, New York Times.

As with Brexit "experts" in the US and UK, who are paid good money to "enlighten" us on political trends, didn't see the US election result coming.

A plethora of articles appeared assuring us that "Trump can't win/Trump won't win." The fact that lots of people turned up at Trump's rallies proved nothing, opined the same "experts" who told us that the large crowds at Jeremy Corbyn rallies didn't mean anything either.

One London punter had the good sense to disregard these wise and learned articles.

He put £200,000 (US$250,000) on a Trump victory — and won a cool half a million pounds.

The mutually back-slapping "pundits" who told us Trump couldn't win, met the "shock" result on the morning of November 9 with incredulity, anger — and in some cases four-letter profanities.

One irate Oxford-educated columnist tweeted:

"Just woke up. Jesus H Christ, America. What the f*** just done. You should be ashamed of yourselves."

The fact that ordinary US voters are being scolded by UK and US punditocracy for voting the "wrong way" shows us the massive disconnect between large sections of the MSM in both countries and the people.

© REUTERS/ Kai Pfaffenbach

Well-heeled media commentators, many of whom attended the same universities, seem dumbfounded that people who are not so well-off and not so privileged, don't see things in the same way as they do.

How many of those who pontificated on the US elections — and gave their "expert" opinions on how Trump couldn't possibly win — have actually spent any time in the "Rust Belt" or the poorest states of the deep south, or ever engaged with working-class Americans, struggling to make ends meet?

If they had, they might just have anticipated what happened on election day. But they were all too busy massaging each other's egos on Twitter and predicting the result that they wanted to see, to hear the cries for change coming from the despised ‘little people', and whose opinions were ignored by Establishment "experts" once again.

Yes. I'm not sure how many of those pledges he'll actually try to fulfill. I have my doubts about the wall for instance. I read an article about his deal making style. He does what it takes to close the deal (says whatever he needs to), then ends up being quite pragmatic. I'm also uncertain whether the military industrial complex will tolerate any significant changes to NATO

This has been his M.O. in every aspect of his business dealings. He will say anything. It's doubtful that he'll fulfill any of it, and "Fox" News will continue to lie and sway their audience. His populace will be hurt, but they won't understand that he's doing it to them. LOL.

Since the gloves are off: your misogyny has always been obvious. You are a man who hates women, that's clear. Which usually means that women don't like you. There's probably a reason for that. Trump doesn't love women, but he buys them. If you're not worth billions, you probably go without. And resent it. Then blame the women. I suspect you're an anorak-wearing basement-living computer troll who hasn't seen a woman beyond a video screen in 15 years. Men who live with and love women may get frustrated, as women do with men, but real misogyny like yours comes from lack of familiarity, or some deep-seeded Mommy issues. So who needs a shrink. Hmmm?

You are aptly named :). LOL!

A point worth making is that Hillary Clinton did win the popular vote. Whatever we decide to do about the electoral college, this is the 2nd election in recent years that the Democratic candidate has won the most votes, but has lost the election.

They need to get rid of that electoral college since the popular vote is the will of the people.

Thanks teddy. Yeah, some subjects are very divisive... Some pubs in UK used to have house rules - no talk about religion or politics... so yeah, let's all of us keep it civil at least.

It would be nice if people can remember and adhere to this. The lack of civility extends to sports, religion, and anything as long as people aren't mature enough to state an opinion without resorting to name calling and anger. It's really sad.

Please, never they killed black people as easily as while black president was in power. Wait a second, he still is. And that massacre in a minority club in Orlando several months ago. Must be Trump.

What? Where did you get that idea? The killing of blacks is so pervasive throughout America's history. The lynchings, the Civil War, slavery? Killing blacks has zero to do with President Obama. OTOH, many whites had asserted that if Trump didn't win that they would start a race war and kill blacks. So, no to that info, just no.

Below is a list of racist incidents just one day after Trump's election... If you think his racist rhetoric is no big deal, you're severely underestimating the issue. The point isn't about how racist Trump is or isn't, it's about how his racist words impact his supporters. Someone around here once referred to "closet racists," and I think that's spot on. Unfortunately, you'll be seeing them out of the closet frequently. On a social level, America is in line for a wake-up call for the next four years.

https://twitter.com/i/moments/796417517157830656

Couldn't agree more, but it's doubtful that the kind of people who commit those acts of violence will see the error of their ways, rather, they will feel justified. Trump's entire campaign was based on hatred and divisiveness. Trump pulled the cover off of America's covert racism. This election proved that.

You're mistaken. That is a false narrative that has been used to attack Obama's presidency. Anyone willing to accept the truth only needs to look at the crime data. The only thing that's changed under the current administration is the advent of social media, and consequentially greater awareness of the crime that's taking place. Such a simple thing to check, it's really ironic that the availability of more information has led to an increasing unwillingness to search for the truth

The crime data reveals all.

That's a really silly post.

Racism was always an issue in the US, and will likely always be (pretty much in the world, not just in the US). Trump didn't invent racism, the same way Obama didn't stop it. Racism and hate were always present, except now we're dealing with a president who more or less advocated them, and his supporters feel entitled to come out of the woodwork. That's the point.

Excellent summation.

Have you actually ever listed to Donald Trump open his mouth and speak?

Also, there is absolutely no worse reply to "Trump is a racist piece of garbage" than "look how bad Clinton is." Yeah, no shit. But how does one negate the other? It's the Kellyanne Conway school of arguments.

That's the funny part of this election. Trump was saying racist and incorrect things throughout and people didn't seem to hear it. Trump not advocating racism? LOL! That's all he did and he appealed to the closet racists who now believe that it is open season on minorities. Such a huge point that people have totally missed. SMDH.

Trump's rhetoric has no doubt been divisive, he has made some outrageous remarks. I don't think that's in doubt or anybody is disputing it. That's how his campaign will likely be remembered by many. Presidency is different from campaigning for the job and a lot of people see him as an agent for change.

I see everybody is focusing ONLY on the racist statements, misogyny ... no word on some of his other aspirations....

- Investing in American Infrastructure.... this is something he's been talking about for years (see video above).

- Bringing American business and tax dollars back home slashing taxes.

- Showing soft power in American geopolitical interests but generally looking at more of isolationist approach to foreign policy.

- Showing strong power in American economic interests

- Looking after the military and particularly veterans.

What many people are missing is that Trump's words affects lives. That can't be brushed under the rug. The change agent according to his own words is to wreak havoc on non-whites, at least that's the message that they appear to have gotten. There have been demonstrations of this starting the morning after his win, and what were his supporters doing? Declaring war on non-whites. Trump spoke very clearly, but many (who are not affected) simply shrug their shoulders and say, "He's not going to do anything that blatant."

How do we know whether or not he'll institute policies to do just that? It's nuts that anyone voted for this hateful, evil man, and he didn't just get hateful and evil, he's demonstrated all of these qualities as long as I've known of him.

Well yeah, if you show me a racist, misogynistic, violence -advocating, hate-filled person, I've very unlikely to go "aha, I see, now tell me about his qualities."

The above should pretty much disqualify that person.

Also, it doesn't help that for much of the issues stated above, he hasn't presented any clear plans without generalities.

Not one d*mn plan, and the experts are scratching their heads as to how he can fulfill his campaign promises. It's all a crock of manure. People will see.
