I really meant the fact of the structure itself, not even it being closed. It cuts the wind and adds shade. All of the courts echo when they're enclosed, but I'd personally hate to hear Ashe with the roof closed. The crowd is noisy anyway! LOL. I do believe that the size of the court (and the crowd) can be intimidating. That's why I make the case for the veterans.
hopefully New York will not get residual rain from the weather in Texas...just seems that the event has no buzz..we used to get pumped up this time of the year even the media is somewhat muted about this event.Serena brought buzz to this event win or lose..

I don't think the weather from Harvey will affect us, at all. For the foreseeable future, we've got lovely dry weather and not hot. Serena being out is always a buzz-kill. And the potential for new #1 is diffused across 7 women, I think. It's sort of hard to know where to look. I'm hoping that once things get rolling, we'll find the drama. It may take a couple of rounds. That said, I also hope that Serena comes back after the baby. The sport dearly still needs her.

@Moxie I think she will come back after childbirth. It's another challenge to overcome. She doesn't have any challenges left as far as records go, but I believe she refuses to be outdone by Kim who came back and won multiple majors. Add to that she paid Patrick his salary for the year so he wouldn't coach anyone else. That's pretty much a dead giveaway.

Current #1 is Plisko by less than 100 points. Halep has had many chances to overtake her and has choked on them all.

Very possibly. This could be a wild and crazy USO. However, not to discount the top players on offer. I know you dislike Muguruza, but she comes in with a lot of momentum and confidence. Halep is going to feel like she has a lot to prove. Pliskova has a challenging first round, and she's #1 for the first time. And Kerber is defending. These are my favorites for the title.

What a schedule?

The day session as well as the night session starts with players tested positive for Meldonium. Does Meldonium sponsor USO or what?

Who are you talking about, specifically, beyond Sharapova?

Zverev tested positive for meldonium...its ironic that its russians opening an American sports event...thats a slap in the face of Americans.

A google search says that A. Zverev has used meldonium, but no indication that he's "tested positive" for it, since it has been banned. That the night session includes Sasha and Sharapova has as much to do with Halep, for one. And I'm fairly sure the people paying for the expensive seats at the Opening will want to see Sasha over Querrey. It's not really a slap in the face to anyone.

I was talking about Vavra. She underwent a silent ban last year after having tested positive for Meldonium. She is playing Garbage in the opening match on Ashe.

And again I ask you: why call Muguruza "garbage?" I thought you said you have nothing against her. Do you just think it's funny? No kindness for her fans?

It is old news. She tested positive and while the hearing was going on, she was under silent ban.
Everyone likes to say "silent ban," while never taking into account that the powers that be suspend them, pending hearing. It's not made public to protect the player's reputation, should the results turn out to in the player's favor, as in this case. It's not a "silent ban," which sounds bad on the player and the ITF. The notion is of innocence pending review. Is it not?

lol..the pseudo name Garbage is really jarring....hehehe...I heard it from several tennis forums...some call her ladyboy because she looks like Nishikori and those big feet.
