The Tournament:

The US Open Tennis Championships is a hardcourt tennis tournament that began life as the U.S. National Championship in 1881.

The venue for the championship is the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, Queens, New York City. It's former home was the Forest Hills complex.

The tournament consists of men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles, with additional tournaments for senior, junior, and wheelchair players.

The US Open is the only Grand Slam that employs tiebreakers in every set of a match.

About New York

Beyond everything you already know about New York, it is a city of islands and not just its most famous one, Manhattan. Quaint City Island, iconic and outrageous Coney Island, suburban Randall's Island, historic Governor's Island, once a military fortress, then a Coast Guard base and now a city park dedicated to installation art. The city is surrounded by waterways. Marinas abound, and many New Yorkers commute via ferry.

We embrace summer here, as it is rather short. There are beautiful beaches within the city limits. And we don't always eat posh food. Summer is for Long Island oysters, steamer clams, lobster rolls, and hot dogs. Nathan's Famous in Coney Island on the boardwalk is the one to eat.

As the summer winds down, Fashion Week begins. The lazy days are soon to be over, and attitude will come back in full force.

When do organizers find out that this woman has to qualify for a tournament like this. And that goes for all mandatory and premier 5 tournaments too.

All depends on which Simona shows up. The one that played Osta in RG and froze will not defeat a Sharapova who has something to prove.

It's a super-tricky first round, that's for sure. But Simona has something to prove, esp. after RG, and she is match ready. I think Maria will show rust and go out.

the winner of USA Open is someone who has not yet won a slam.Ashe is a very overwhelming arena just by its sheer size and those swirling winds,,the noise.
I predict a surprise win..someone who is not on anyone s radar..

I'm working on my Draw Challenge and I notice that Pliskova and I see that she plays Linette first round, who has been having a decent summer. This could be a tricky way for Karolina to start her first Major as #1. (PS: Do click on the link and enter the Draw Challenge. It'll be fun!)

Does anyone know as to how many different players have a chance to possibly end up as #1 at the end of this year's USO.

Top 8 all have a chance - only depending on the other 7 and how far they get and of course how far they individually get. So fetch your calculator and make a scheme :)

Of course a player like Kuznetsova is almost out of the game. If she should have a chance Pliskova and Halep should be out after first round and then she can hope everybody else is leaving before she's in the final - but teoretically she can.

Halep has a tricky first RD. Plisko and Kerbie need to get back to the finals (unlikely). Like @Hoergren said Caro, Sveta and Konta w/ an outside chance, but need to win it and need a little help from the others. I think it will be a tossup between Mugu and Svito who leaves NY as #1.

But by that very point, you make the argument for someone who's been there and weathered the crowds, the wind, and Ashe. (For the record, the wind is much less now that the roof is up there. It's quite a lot more enclosed. Personally, while you get more shade, I think it makes it more stifling for the fans.)

they only close it if its going to rain plus it seems to have an echo..I can imagine the noise when its closed...I remember Na li saying that the court overwhelmed her..the sheer size of it.
Caro loves the noise and she plays better in New York.

I really meant the fact of the structure itself, not even it being closed. It cuts the wind and adds shade. All of the courts echo when they're enclosed, but I'd personally hate to hear Ashe with the roof closed. The crowd is noisy anyway! LOL. I do believe that the size of the court (and the crowd) can be intimidating. That's why I make the case for the veterans.
