@Busted, I think the opportunity is even greater for Rafa: he's got a walking wounded Roger to deal, whereas Rafa seems in good health.

At this point, Rafa is the clear favorite to win the tournament, in my opinion.

I'm relatively new, but don't really understand what this argument is about. Federer went on record saying he pulled his lower back (a chronic injury) during the Montreal final, and therefore had to withdraw from Cincinnati--FOR INJURY. He came into the US Open clearly compromised (if one watches either/both of his matches) but decided to see how things go, play thru the injury and let the chips fall where they may. The above is factual based on actual quotes from Fed and commentators. So not sure what the dispute is about?

In a nutshell the dispute is about illogical thinking from a combative Nadal fan. Don't hold your breath waiting for it to make sense.

The problem with this thinking is that some people can actually play hurt unlike your boy. Maybe it is a case where playing is unlikely to make it worse. It is a major and he is close to #1 so he, gasp, sucked it up and is playing without being close to 100%. He's done it many times before with less on the line than there is here.
I know you guys are just in a petty argument, but obviously Rafa has played hurt, Darth. More than Roger. Probably why Carol is being so intractable...all of the times when people say that he wasn't hurt, he just lost, and now that the shoe is on the other foot, etc. Have a look at this article in the NYTimes, though. Roger says it's not his back, but his lack of preparation. But the writer says something is clearly not right. This seems a fair assessment from the writer. I'm willing to believe that Roger is somehow impaired, and that he wouldn't say so.

ITA. If Roger makes it past Lopez tomorrow I'm going to be shocked. Nadal himself said he needed to go out and PROVE why he's #1 - because he hasn't shown anybody squat off clay since Doha 2014. I'm sure his fans will be happy to point out his Stuttgart win in 2015, but let's get real - a 250 event is NOT a major tournament let alone a Slam. And his clay wins this year weren't exactly stacked with top players. The average ranking of the payers he beat? 33.28. Yeah...I did the math. His big wins? An off his game Djokovic, an injured Murray, headcase Wawrinka, Zrevev when he was #20 - and Thiem 3 times. Yawn.

So yeah - Nadal's got something to prove and if he can't win THIS DECIMATED US OPEN while healthy and all the other big names are either out injured, playing injured and looking crappy while doing so or are have already lost and are out of the tournament? Well, he may as well not play again until the 2018 clay season. How are you going to strengthen your GOAT claim when you can't make it past this motley banged up competition?

Roger told a reporter a few days ago that he'd played injured about 50% of his career - so maybe he's just got a higher pain tolerance than Nadal? :lol6::lol3: By Carol's definitely you're only really injured if you take time off - and that's obviously ridiculous and not true. Or is she saying that Djokovic is lying about his elbow bothering him for a year-and-a-half and he played through it? So - what - because they didn't take 3 months off, that means everybody's lying about their injuries except Nadal? Ridic. Just ridic.

He doesn't play through pain much or well. I think that's fair to say. The guy complains if he gets a hangnail and he's pulled out of a slam 2-3 weeks in advance because he had a tummy ache.

*Roger will never admit during a tournament that he is hurt.

*Roger is hurt, OR afraid of hurting something. It amounts to the same thing as far as his game is concerned. He is tentative. He is not bending down for low balls like he usually does and he is letting a lot of balls go that he would usually chase.

*None of it matters. He does not need this or any other tournament. He can retire tomorrow and all would still be good, but I would be a bit pissed because there is one more Year End tournament he has in him :)

And now Isner is out. The unexpected Zverev is still in.

So, no one needs to worry that Isner will win USO. :D

Now, no top 10 player in bottom half.

Isner called an MTO and somebody came and treated him for neck pain (in the middle of second set).

I agree with your comments. But, may be, just may be Roger will go all out when needed. Now with weak opponents, he is trying to win with minimum effort (even if that minimum effort translates to more time on court and more sets played). This is all primarily based on wishful thinking though.

And now Isner is out and the highest seed left in the bottom half is#16 Pouille. I'd say this is slightly different than #17 Federer winning the Aussie Open...

No, that would be PCB seeded #12. Your statement will become true after the next match when PCB loses to NKITB though.

Sounds to me like you're saying that, win or lose this tournament, Nadal is in a no-win situation. If he wins, he wins against either crappy or injured competition. If he loses, he loses against either crappy or injured competition.

It's this type of fannish rudeness and unfairness that breeds the backlash that you get from Carol. There are so many things that are wrong about your post that I can't even address it. But fair fans will know that Nadal has had a lot of injury issues as well as will say that Roger is clearly not playing at 100% now, or that all athletes play with a certain amount of pain and niggle a lot of the time.

a clear favorite ? Manacor's bull ? he played bad in both Montreal and Cincy so I guess he won't lift the trophy, surface isn't the best for him,, injured or not

It's in response to her comments that it's not a true injury unless a player misses at least a couple months of action. I find it difficult to believe even she thinks that.

We know with Nadal that when he is out he misses a lot of time and generally he doesn't play through major discomfort. And what I said about the tummy ache is true (2013 AO)

I agree ..this is starting to have the feel of RG and SW19... Although Roger and Rafa isn't playing great or fantastic..Rafa should take this title , Fed is not able to compete at the level he needs to be to be dominant.
