Davydenko is no longer a threat to Nadal. Those days are over.

Haha, You fell for it.

Good day all!

The men's singles 1st round completed on schedule despite concerns by many that it would not.

The first round has seen its share of upsets this year - 10.
Here is a roundup of the seeded upsets.

[11] Kei Nishikori - Looked flat, says he wasn't injured, just didn't play well

[14] Jerzy Janowicz - injury to back - took MTO, not much help. 1st serve avg. only 109 mph, 2nd - 90. Compare this to match vs. Murray at Wimbledon - 1st serve avg. - 128, 2nd - 108, probably could have retired, but toughed it out - was just rolling serves in, some serves only 75 mph. His groundstrokes were also affected as he could not rotate properly.

[15] Nicolas Almagro - Istomin played better - only 2 UE's for match - extended his H2H to 3-0, 1 on each surface

[16] Fabio Fognini - destroyed by the American, Rajeev Ram - 1, 2, and 2. Didn't watch.

[24] Benoit Paire - Up and down match - very tight - Bogolomov, Jr. snatched it 7-5 in the decider tiebreak. Paire served for the match in the 5th up 5-4, 30-0, but couldn't hold to win. He said his back was in a lot of pain during the match and would have probably withdrawn the next match anyway.

[25] Grigor Dimitrov - didn't watch.

[27] Fernando Verdasco - down 2 sets early, came back, but outplayed in decider

[28] Juan Monaco - retired with headache, stomach pains

[29] Jurgen Melzer - predictable loss after winning the title at Winston-Salem on Saturday.

[30] Ernests Gulbis - up and down match, lost decider.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that all have played the 1st round, which seeded players do you see as the most likely victims in the 2nd round?

Here are the remaining seeds and their opponents in the second round:
(Top half in black - Bottom half in blue)

[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. Benjamin Becker (GER)
[2] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. Rogerio Dutra Silva (BRA)
[3] Andy Murray (GBR) vs. Leonardo Mayer (ARG)
[4] David Ferrer (ESP) vs. Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP)
[5] Tomas Berdych (CZE) vs. Denis Kudla (USA)
[6] Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) vs. Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)
[7] Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Carlos Berlocq (ARG)
[8] Richard Gasquet (FRA) vs. Stephane Robert (FRA)
[9] Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) vs. Ivo Karlovic (CRO)
[10] Milos Raonic (CAN) vs. Pablo Andujar (ESP)

[12] Tommy Haas (GER) vs. Yen-Hsun Lu (TPE)
[13] John Isner (USA) vs. Gael Monfils (FRA)
[17] Kevin Anderson (RSA) vs. Marcos Baghdatis (CYP)
[18] Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) vs. Dudi Sela (ISR)
[19] Tommy Robredo (ESP) vs. Frank Dancevic (CAN)
[20] Andreas Seppi (ITA) vs. Somdev Devvarman (IND)

[21] Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) vs. Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR)
[22] Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) vs. Edouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA)
[23] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) vs. Bradley Klahn (USA)
[26] Sam Querrey (USA) vs. Adrian Mannarino (FRA)

[31] Julian Benneteau (FRA) vs. Jeremy Chardy (FRA)
[32] Dmitry Tursunov (RUS) vs. Guillaume Rufin (FRA)

Respectfully,
masterclass

Good recap of upsets, MC, and thanks for laying out the question of other potential ones for next round.

As to the ones from the first round I would like to add this:

Nishikori: He's knocking on the door of the top 10, and I think he'd be the first Japanese player to make it. I think he's feeling the pressure.

Janowicz: Well, bad luck about the back, but it's a shame for an up-and-comer to have such an opportunity (the quarter he was drawn in) and not be able to take it. I'm both disappointed for him, but also a bit IN him.

Of the rest, I thought especially Fognini, Gulbis and Dimitrov continue to prove that they're not sturdy enough to capitalize on their talents. (Judgemental? Yes. So sue me.)

As to potentials coming up:

Isner v. Monfils: depends on which Monfils shows up, though Isner has been good, of late.
Anderson v. Baghdatis: Same, as to Baghdatis.
Wawrinka v. Karlovic: I think Karlovic has been playing with a looseness of movement I've never seen since his illness. I'd think Stan should win, but it could get tricky.
Tipsy v. Sela: Tipsarevic has been hard to predict for a while.

The Nadal fan is rooting for Davy, so as to even the H2H. :clap Looks like it won't happen, though. Folks listing Davydenko as a threat to Nadal here were pretty much the same ones listing Verdasco. You've gotta find something, right?

Nadal can breathe a sigh of relief. Davy lost to Dodig.;)

Oh, rats. I'm sure Dodig is no threat, but Davy hasn't been one for some time, either. He's probably trying to protect his legacy, which is his H2H v. Nadal. :snigger

Dodig will be a nice spar for the Bull. He will make him sweat a bit more than Frat Boy. Dodig just keeps his head down and grinds, so have to respect that.

Dodig will have to watch the 2011 Montreal match against Rafa and see what worked there...He was playing good tennis.

Except that 2011 Montreal Nadal wasn't 2013 Montreal Nadal. ;):clap

Feliciano Lopez through! You folks might make fun of me, but, the way this quarter is, anyway, and the way that it is opening up, I think Lopez has more than a small chance to make the QFs.

"Running" and "Milos" in the same sentence is odd. Maybe hunched hog nose has been doing sprints. :D
