Wow guys. Truly horrible display from Roger tonight. Shockingly bad. Was still close because Millman ain't that great. BUT he did play incredible tonight. For him at least. Great serving. Didn't go for too much. Fed gave him every advantage though. I nearly broke my computer in half after some of his last drop shots. WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT?!!!!!! Like, just STAAAAHHHPP dude.
This will be remembered as the year that the heat/humidity wreaked havoc. I think it got Fed tonight. Looked exhausted from halfway through the first set. Not looking for excuses. Millman played well enough. Fed got beat in a close one. But just did not have his serve tonight. Nothing to blame there but lack of execution. Maybe his legs were heavy or something hurt. Who knows. He's 37 now. But mostly just was too stubborn to change his game plan. Too stubborn to take a little off to get those first serves in. And not as consistent as he was at 27. His peaks found him 3 more slams the last few years. But his valleys have been a bit lower.
Backhand was off. Forehand was off for a bit. Serve off. That drop shot stubbornness. It was like he was mad it wasn't working so he was gonna keep doing it until it did. Ridiculous.
Oy.
Ya know, there's a narrative about Fed, on occasion over the years, losing/throwing matches right before he'd have to play Nadal or Djokovic and maybe Murray too. But mostly the first two. And I think that maybe comes into play here. Just knew he didn't have the goods to beat Djokovic. Especially after Djokovic's fairly straight forward win in Cincy. If it wasn't the case in the third set, by the end of the fourth it may have certainly been a factor right? Like, surely it occurred to him there was no way he was gonna recover to be competitive with Djokovic in a days time.
I know. All of this looks like a bunch of excuses. I'm just flabbergasted. Again, Millman was great. Played hard. Hung around. Stayed tough. Deserves a ton of credit. But the match is always on Fed's racket unless its against one of his equals. And Millman simply is not that. Even at 37.
Anyways. Good for Millman.
