Alert: Thiem is in possible trouble. Vesely takes the first set in a tie-breaker.

But, both are playing well. Hard to say what will happen.

Vesely is no stranger to creating upsets (he took out Novak this year).

Did Nole even try? He took on an invitation to go to Madrid and won it! He didn't need that match; looking for rest I'm sure! Mon Dieu, Vesely lost 1 & 2 to Monfils the next day in that Monte Carlo match! :dodgy:  :cover

That is totally disrespectful. If Nole wanted vacation, he does not have to even sign up for MC.
Just don't tell me that Novak did not want to win that match. :snicker

It is true that Vesely lost the next match. That usually happens to an youngster coming from a high of a big upset. That does not negate their previous victory.

Congrats to Vesely. I saw the whole match. Both of them played very well. Vesley earned the win by playing the three tie-breakers just a notch better than Thiem. In each of the three tie-breakers Veseky got onto early lead and maintained it to win. :clap

Now, Thiem gets much needed rest.

My boy Zverev will win the third quarter.

Lot of casualties today. 7 seeds lost today.

Totally 11 of 32 seeds have lost so far.

I think it's a pity about Thiem. He threw all the right shapes coming into it, after a stellar French, but he played too much, maybe. Mental fatigue shows up in tiebreaks. However, so does quality, and Vesely showed enough of that to deserve the win...

Thiem played Munich, Madrid, Rome, Nice, RG week1, RG week2, Stuttgart, Halle. That is eight weeks in a row.

But, he was still physically there today and not tired or injured. As you pointed out, it was just mental fatigue.

I am predicting just one upset for Day 5. Donald Young to show the door for the new seed Lucas Pouille.

Thiem is still work in progress on grass, his serve is not the best and he needs a better one to bail him out when in trouble. Even if he would have won in R2, he was not going to be the same threat as in Paris.

He did himself proud by going out in 3 Tie-Breakers! I think he was just burned out from so much play!

I will forever associate Vesely and Thiem, as they were born a couple months apart i 1993, both came on the scene around the same time, Vesely entering the top 100 first, in 2013. Since then, Thiem has risen much vaster, with Vesely stalling out in the #50ish range. I do see him as a future top 20 player.

Vesely moves pretty well for a tall guy and has a decent serve. Hope he becomes more consistent.

Fabulous ! It can only be a good thing for tennis to get this man back to something like his old form

Love how he blessed himself then looked up to the Wimbledon roof - quite apt if you think about it !!

I have to say it was very reassuring and pleasing to see JMDP back on Centre Court, twacking the ball like it's 2009 again. It didn't even feel like an upset, even though it was, of course. He has a kind draw next round too: Pouille, or Young...

It didn't seem like an upset did it?!

Poetic justice would be for him to give old Murray a five set marathon match to prep the Scot for his final. :snicker

Also, Fog is leading 2 sets to none over grass aficionado Deliciano.

Heh heh, glad to see the Djokolites still clinging to the myth of fatigue. Poor Djoker! Try organic eggs next time, sucka! :snicker
