Stepanek has won the first round of quals. So did Masha Zverev, A-to-Z's (considerably older) brother. Both are one more win away from making it to the main draw.

Several Americans made the main draw through the qualifying:
Smyczek, Novikov, Harrison, Donaldson, then Stepanek, Alejandro Gonzalez, Gomez.

This is their best chance to take a big tourney outside the "Big 4!" If they blow it; esp. with all the miles on Nole, I'm done! I've called also-rans of the tour "gutless" for years! We can wait and see if they perpetuate the terrible losing streak! Tsonga broke though a couple years ago barely by taking Roger out in the final IIRC! Nole doesn't need it, but it would be a sad day for tennis if they allow 1 lone Big 4'r to take this tourney; even though I won't mind it at all! :cover

First winner of the event in the main draw, Anderson def. Troicki 7-5, 6-3.
Too bad Shapovalov drew Kyrgios to play in the R1.

A very nice result by Steven Diez (CAN), ranked 190, to upset Kyle Edmund:
3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Edmund is ranked 68, a 21y old player, who is ascending through the rankings. No matter how you put it, is an upset.

I suppose he's backed up his big win better than Ward who's also another anonymous Brit outside of DC! :nono :p

Hey herios, are you ready for your boy Shapovalov to get pounded by Kyrgios? Would love to see the baby Canuck upset the tantrumy Aussie.

me too, but it is a very tough challenge for the young guy.
Hopefully he will play freely and make the most ou of it, even if he loses, which he more likely will.

I would be content if at least one non-big-four player makes the final this time. :lolz::laydownlaughing:cool:

Well that's pretty much guaranteed since Rafa, Roger, & Andy have bowed out! Stan was a part of the group until recently; hopefully we'll get someone like Thiem or Kei in the final for something different vs Nole (if he makes it)! :puzzled :nono

I'm flipping between this and the WTA matches, but Nick doesn't look right. He's not moving to ball as well as usual. Taking nothing away from the kid though. He's a shotmaker and will be very good in another year or so.
