I admire your courage in the face of adversity. If you subscribe to a particular religion, derive solace from it. Your faith will help you through whatever lies ahead. You are in my thoughts.

Well everyone the news is not good from specialist. I have stage 4 cancer because of being in two areas, 2cm in pancreas and all of the liver. It is not curable. So I will be taking a biopsy in the next few days to analysis the cancer and then start treatment at the Victoria Cancer Clinic. Prognosis not great but I think most of you can get an idea that I do not give it. Even though I live on Vancouver Island I am Boston Strong! I have amazing support from the area I live in and many parts of the world and from all of you too, who I have great chats with. I will have to cancel my trip to my beloved tournament in Eastbourne, because of pending treatments. I thank all of you for your support and will still pop in add a Rubydo comment on some tournaments I will be watching. One thing for sure, I can spend more time watching tennis on the computer now! Be assured I will not lose my sense of humour!
I will keep you in my prayers :hug

I'm very sorry to hear this Rubydo. I've always enjoyed your personalized reports and thoughts from the field. Hoping you kick this thing so you can keep watching your tennis in person.

Thoughts and prayers,

Dave, I'm kind of lost for words after reading this post...

Saddened to hear your prognosis mate and I'm sure I'm speaking for every poster on this board in wishing you every ounce of energy, every bit of luck and best wishes for the tough road ahead.

I hope we can all be a welcome light hearted distraction on the horrible days, and comrades on the good days.

All the best buddy, stay strong.

Thanks again everyone, it is a joy to know that I have brought all of you some of my best photos to this site and my comments have been so well received. The prognosis remains grim but I am looking at alternative ways to battle this. The kindness and support I have received from so many tennis fans has been gratifying. Brit Box and Gold's Girls comments brought a huge smile to my face with your comments today, as well as the rest of you with your kindness. I maybe at 0-40 right now, but I can tell you this I will fight to the last point I have in my arsenal of tricks!

Just to update you, I have many friends who have holistic knowledge and awareness about cancer, that the normal medical society don't even want to discuss, because the drug companies have them wrapped around their fingers. Not saying the normal route can't help some people, but the doc I saw on Friday, said well, all we can do is give you more pills when the pain gets worse and your liver will eventually stop and you will ...well you know. I will not accept that, I have already started to change my diet some what, take some herbal medicines, because, no one it is a long weekend in Canada has even called to see how my wife and I are doing. It's like a tennis match, Eugenie Bouchard continues to play the same way all the time, with so little success this year, she needs to find a different approach, get out of the sandbox and try new ways of competing against players she should easily beat. I still plan to cover the Vancouver Open in August, come hell or high water. All of you have given me that support and incentive. Thanks greatly especially Tented( you are truly the best!)

Dave,

Just wanted to tell you about my dad. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 1998. The doctor told us two months later that it had spread to his bones and gave him three years. He went to a cancer clinic in Houston and went through their intensive chemo program for a month. He had a pretty rough time of it. I went back to the States to visit him during the treatment and he told me it was too rough so he was going to quit the program, just take medication and follow the diet the doctor gave him. He said if that doesn't work then he said "when it's time to go it's time to go." About three months after the treatments, the cancer had completely disappeared from his bones. He still has the cancer but he has been follow his doctor's advice, watching his diet, taking the medication and getting his monthly checkups for 17 years now. He's still working full-time (he's a church pastor) and getting along. I have to admit I worry about him all the time and kind of hold my breath when I ask him how his last checkup went but so far, God has been good. Life is funny that way. My mom, who was healthier than anyone, suddenly passed away eight years ago, while my dad is still doing his work. He always has had a positive attitude about the whole thing. That's a big part of it I think.
The report you got from the doctor certainly wasn't good but I'm glad you are gearing up to take this head on and beat it. I've never had a sickness like that so I can't say I understand what you're going through, but you have friends on here who are praying and hoping the best for you. My family does a little devotion time before we head off to work and school every morning and last week at the end we prayed for you. My kids (daughter is seven and son is four) asked who is Dave. I told them he's a guy who likes tennis even more than daddy. Their eyes got big like they were thinking "there's such a person?" lol Stay positive and we're praying for you. Sorry for the rambling post but just wanted to tell that. Take care.

Yes hang in there Dave. Life is really weird. My School lead guidance councelor was diagnosis with cancer I would say about 8 or 9yrs ago it had spread to his pancreas. I am no longer in the system, but whenever I meet my old friends from school I always asked about him and let me tell you he's still going strong. So do whatever you have to do to get better even if you have to go outside the norm. Stay positive and continue living your life.

I am very sorry to hear about your health issues. Although tennis is a sport we love here, it takes a back seat in light of our mortality. I am happy that you have support on your current journey.

All of you have given me so much to be thankful for, with your warmth and kindness, I have tears of joy in my eyes, very rare for a normally staunch reporter/ photographer, flexing his media badge and photo t-shirt to signify you can go right to the front of the crowd on the smaller courts! You know me I would be polite about it! I am feeling quite good today, getting incredible advice as you all say from all corners of the globe, especially from some great friends in Boston. Get my biopsy in a few days time and I will request it to be sent to Mass General in Boston for a second opinion. Yes Kirijax I have a faith albeit not strong, but believe in it's power and I will glean strength from it. Your post was simply stunning and can't thank you enough!:clap
Best to all you of,
Dave

Support group from our regional hospital yesterday was fantastic!. Dr. on my wave length entirely, believing try all alternative methods of fighting this cancer, but continue to do my yoga and meditation,( write some of my best stuff) when in a meditative state! One of the ladies there knew of my tennis exploits from the column I write. Will be following the FO very closely both men's and women's draws could make this years open a very enthralling event. I have a biopsy check in around 5 days. I will be popping by for sure with my comments when time permits. Again, thanks for your tennis friendship!
I will keep you posted.

Keep at it Dave, keeping good spirits is the best medicine.
I was overcome by sorrow reading this thread especially knowing the best I could do would be wishes and prayers.

May we see another 10 Eastbourne reports from you.
